Exhaust manifold W.T.H. IS THIS NORMAL?

Dismantling 3.7, P.S. head off, then I see this. Is there a reason for the noticeable step-down gap on the Driver side manifold? Is something missing in that gap I should know about before reassembly? Why a gap between the gasket and manifold? help, I can't find anything on it.

From the first picture the mounting surface of the exhaust manifold is the highest point in the picture. The second picture looks like it’s not lined up correctly with the head

Exactly, its a perfect machined step down on the mating surface. Someone must know.I will take more pics tomorrow, but, there is a fourth hole on the cyl head directly underneath the step down as I call it. As for second pic, pay no attention to the placement of the mannie to the head in the pic, its just laying beside it.

Scratch that, second pic mannifold is mounted to head.
