Discharge or Recharge

I'm getting ready to replace my A/C compressor. Do I need to totally discharge the system of freon or can I just re-charge it back to full when I'm done?

R134A is now known to be as harmfull as R12 so yes you must have a shop evac the system completely before you open the system up.It's the law.

When replacing the compressor make sure you also replace the orifice tube(whole line on a KJ) and the reciever/dryer to keep the warranty on the new compressor.You will need the correct PAG oil for your system also.


Since you asked please do not attempt this repair since you have no idea what's involved.It's not a DIY repair without the correct tools and know-how.But by all means just loosen a line with it charged,you'll learn your lesson fast after a trip to the emergency room if your lucky to be alive afterwards.

check the freon first without taking it in to have the pressures tested you can try adding some freon yourself using an inexpensive recharge kit available at most auto repair shops and stores and big box stores in the automotive department, just follow the directions that come with it.

Those don't work worth a crap.
