Atmospheric River Storm

Hello all. Happy Holidays and Merry Xmas!!

You may of heard of the Atmospheric River Storm hitting LA. Flooding freeways etc. As a result Old Blue. Our 2008 KK LTD sprung rain leaks. The sun roof passenger drain leak is back. Go figure after 5 inches of rain

But now we have a rear hatch leak. Rain ️ s coming through the plastic trim piece near the rear of the headliner.

Anyone know the most commonly leak points? Roof rack mounting spots?? Or??

I have a leak that drips down from that rear center trim piece as well. I used marine sealer around cracks at the roof rack studs several years ago, and that stopped it for a while. Then I went to Flex Seal and that worked for a while too. It seems like there is enough vibration or flex to crack or unstick all the sealers I have tried so far. I have just kept a towel in the trunk for the last couple of years. I know that is not a good solution because I’m sure things are rusting in there. So, I understand your predicament! Sorry not to have a solid answer.

Not sure where its coming from. At least im in SoCal. So can always just garage it when rain is predicted. Once things dry out. Ill try to track it down.

Just an update. In case anyone searches for this topic sometime.

The sunroof hoses were intact from when i snugged those up with hose clamps. But there was water in the plastic passenger side A pilar cover. Also wet on rear passenger floor when pulling up carpet today to let it dry.

I silconed around the antenna base, third brake light, and wiring grommets on rear hatch. Also pulled the covers off the roof rack factory brackets. Guess what. Nuts were very loose after 16 years. All retightened and siliconed where water could seep through.

Id bet rear and front passenger floor was wet due to leak from roof rack factory brackets since they are right over the b pillar. And above center of the “puddle”

Once things are dry, and all trim put back. Ill report back when it rains next.

TSB 23-006-13 Details​

• Symptom: Wet headliner in the rear corners (right or left).
• Cause: Insufficient sealing in the roof ditch area (the channels under the roof rack rails).
• Fix: Inspecting the rear headliner and applying a high-tech clear seam sealer to the roof ditch.

Common Non-TSB Solutions​

If your leak is coming directly from the rear hatch glass or the tailgate interior, owners frequently report these fixes:

• Glass Gasket Gap: The weatherstrip at the bottom center of the flip-up glass often shrinks, leaving a small gap. Close this gap with a small amount of RTV silicone or weatherstrip adhesive.
• Wiring Grommets: Check the rubber accordion boots at the top of the hatch where the wiring enters the body; ensure they are fully seated and not torn.
• Roof Rack Bolts: Water can seep through the mounting points of the roof rails if the factory seals have degraded
