OK, I have a 2002 Liberty V6. When the transfer case is in 2WD for normal driving, the "Part Time" light in the instrument panel is on all the time. When I engage 4x4 Hi, the "Part Time" light goes completely out, but 4x4 works fine. If I engage 4x4 Low, then the separate 4 Lo lamp comes on properly.

Why does this happen and how can I fix?

Thanks in advance

The problem you are having is that you have a bad transfer case position sensor, this is a common problem. I believe there is a how to on this exact problem.

OK, the dealer tells me there are two available transfer cases for the 2002 Liberty V6 automatic...the Command Trac and the Selec Trac. Which does he have, or does it matter if they use the same switch? I didn't have the VIN # so they couldn't tell me which one. This is actually a friend's vehicle, so getting the VIN is not super easy.

The way to tell if you have the command or selec trac transfer case look at your shift lever. If the lever has 2Hi,4Hi,N,4Lo you have the command trac. If the lever has 2Hi, 4 Full time,4 Part time, N, 4 Lo you have the selec trac.

Got it - yeah, its part time only. I wonder if they use the same switch. Dealer quoted me $78 plus $5 for the "seal" which is probably an o-ring.

Yeah, I figured. I will reuse it. The company I work for also has a large supply of o-rings with a cost literally in pennies so I could probably get the correct one as well.

Thanks for the tip.
