2002 Liberty Speedometer Issue

OK My friend's Liberty is having issues with her Speedo.

We're dealing with an '02 Liberty here, with 151k miles on it.

The speedo is late to react to the speed. No check engine lights, no nothing. Runs perfect. I've rode with her and she drives too slow because she doesn't know how fast she is going. Really annoying. It'll occasionally read 40MPH, then drop, then go back up to 35, then drop, back up, eh you get the point. When taking off it takes a few seconds to show the correct speed.

Speed sensor has been replaced per her mechanic, and some "other sensors". She said he showed her 3 but she can only remember the speed sensor.

Any thoughts? Dead cluster?

maybe is just women that cause the problem.

My girlfriends M. Benz 300e speedo does the same thing. like when she coming to a stop the speedo will drop quick and hit the bumpstop and bounce back up and down until she stops. Then at take off it won't move for a few seconds then shoot up to speed and then work fine. It Get's worse in cold weather.

For your friends Liberty... I would put my bets on a loose connection somewhere, a bad wire or a bad cluster.

Funny you mention that because when the Lib is first started it's worse, then when it warms up... it starts working better. Not perfect, but better.

Check the wires going to the diff sensor,even check the wires in the connector itself for corrosion.

Does the speedometers sending unit sit on the transmission, or the rear end? I cant find it, I've been down there for a half hour and still nothing I can see looks like the sending unit I'm looking for for.



I've decided I want to fix this so my check engine light doesn't burn out, and don't want to buy the new sending unit till I've tried reseating/wiggling the connector.

Any hints/making me look stupid is greatly appreciated.

It's right smack on top of the rear diff,just look for wires going to the top of the diff.

Update: Now that it's warmer it's not acting up anymore. I tested the gauges using Chrysler's handy included gauge test procedure and that much checked out just fine.

I'll check for corrosion when we both go back home, lol.
