Evening All,

First off I would like to thank everyone here for the wonderful FAQ section. However I am posting my problem because despite my efforts, I couldn't find a ready solution.

04 Jeep Liberty with 70,000 miles. About a week ago my rear gate and window began working improperly. I have a spare on the back, the gate swings to the left and the glass up (maybe they all do that, but just in case).

Typically, when I pull my rear door handle, the rear glass will open as well. However, it no longer is. It will however open if I hit the "trunk" button on the fob. So instead of being able to just hit the unlock and pull the handle, I now have to also hit the trunk button.

Any advice if this is a common occurrence?

Any suggestions on removing the rear gate vinyl if necessary?

Is the linkage between the mechanical rear door handle and the glass release physical or electrical?

Thank you in advance for any advice you may have.

Sounds to me like the tailgate latch mechanism has a dodgy connection.

Hey,

I just went through this same ordeal...

The handle on the back swing-gate has two positions; Halfway pulled, and fully pulled. When the handle is halfway pulled, there is a switch that tells the BCM to pop the rear glass. When the handle is pulled all the way out, there is a mechanical linkage that opens the gate. Your linkage to open the rear gate is good, but the switch in the handle went bad, so the computer doesn't know when the handle is halfway pulled, and therefor doesn't pop the glass. You need a new switch, and unfortunately I wasn't able to find one seperate from the door handle... The good news is that the handle is cheap from a site like ebay... and you can find 'em for under 30 dollars. That's how I got mine, you just need to watch.:)

Just hope your swing-gate lock actuator stays good... That's when it'll start to get expensive. The dealer would charge $200 just for the part...

Hope this helped, and best of luck.

Thanks so much for the detailed response that makes perfect sense.

So basically if I were to order the door handle then the switch would have to come with it as it is built into the handle assy itself?

Just want to make sure it is idiot proof before I try ebay or similar.

I beleive the latch assembly is separate from the exterior door handle.

Thanks,

Any suggestions on removing that trim panel or the actual replacement of the assembly?

Is it straightforward or are there any pitfalls?
