bad ball joints will pop like you are explaining also upper strut mounts, if frozen, will make the springs "pop" because they are actually being forced to turn in the spring seat.

Try replacining the upper strut mount. It could be frozen (rust). same thing with the ball joints. Could be frozen. I know there was a recall on mine for all 4 ball joints.

What happens is the foam tears around the outside. just put some form-a-gasket over the split and violla.
