    What is causing this?

    Yes, the head has to come off to repair a seat that has come loose. If you run it with a loose seat, it can damage the piston and possibly the engine block. The engine will need to be rebuilt if either occur.

    Sludge pictures...... Here are a couple pictures of the sludge build-up in the heads. Its no wonder the sludge found it way to the pan and plunged the oil pump suction screen. At least they took care of the outside :emotions34:

    I picked it up from a dealer. The price including tax, license and title fees was $1500. 175,000 miles. The body is perfect except two tiny door dings. Nice interior. It has almost new tires on it. And, it is a 4x4. The bad rod bearing had the crank seized. Because I couldn't turn the engine...

    I plan to rebuild the engine. I picked up a used engine with a good lowers end yesterday. No coolant in the crankcase... just hardened sludge.

    I bought this mint 2004 with a seized up engine this weekend. I suspect she didn't have regular oil changes. Here is the results.... Spun rod bearing that welded itself to the crank. The suction screen plugged with sludge.
