    Leaking water pump

I replaced the water pump about 6 months ago. New gasket, copper RTV, torqued to spec, everything by the book. I now have an intermittent (1-2 times per week) leak. I'll get small puddles/splashes under the Jeep, and I can see the leftover film from evaporated coolant on the water pump...

sway bar bushing and sueaky noise.

I did my bushings and end links in my driveway last summer in about an hour. Not sure which it was, or if it was both, but it quieted my front end down quite a bit, especially in the cold.

T-case and both diff fluid change

I have used a Lube Locker gasket on the rear in place of rtv both times I have done my rear diff. No leaks either time. I know it's more expensive, but it seems to work well and saves some time. gasket

Starting while drive belt is removed

Thanks. I would only be doing it on a completely cold engine. Probably not more than 3 minutes.

Starting while drive belt is removed

I have read on here to try this trick to figure out if various noises are coming from the engine itself or the accessories under the hood. If I do this, I know all sorts of lights on the dash will go nuts, which leads to a couple questions: 1. How long can I safely run the Jeep without the...

    Mystery burning smell

Finally just bit the bullet and had the garage next to my office fix it today. They allowed me to provide the gaskets myself, so I got out for just under $300 total. It shames me a little that I didn't do it myself, but I'll get by. I can still smell the burning a little, but according to...

    Mystery burning smell

Yeah, it seems so. I would like to do it myself, and think I can, I just really wish the high temperature were 15-20 degrees higher. Also, the studs for the valve cover are much higher/longer than my sockets can accommodate. Will a deep socket be sufficient? Pass-through socket? Do most...

    Mystery burning smell

Update: Brought it to the dealership, they said they couldn't identify anything that would cause what I was describing. They did note that my valve cover gaskets were starting to leak and that I needed a new water pump. I replace the water pump myself, but that didn't make the smell go away...

    Possibel water pump leak?

I just did mine Sunday. I did not drain the radiator first. As expected, when you loosen the bolts on the water pump, coolant drains out. I drained probably a gallon of coolant. It's a bit messy, since it's bouncing off several parts on the way down, but a wide rectangular pan, or series of...

What did you do to your jeep today?

Replaced the water pump (and a gallon or so of coolant). Lost heat for a while, seems to be back. Next project: valve cover gaskets

    How to: Install/Replace 3.7l Waterpump.

(Potentially) dumb question: if I don't need to replace my coolant (I don't), is there any real reason to remove the lower radiator hose? If I don't, when I pull off the old water pump, how much coolant will drain out?

    Mystery burning smell

Yeah, it's definitely not an oil-based smell (gear, motor, transmission). Could be plastic, but I lean heavily towards rubber. The reason I don't think it's a tire rubbing is that I can smell it when it's been idling for 5 minutes but hasn't been driven yet. I may have to bite the bullet...

    No, how do I check?

    Mystery burning smell

I wish it was a bacon smell. It's much more rubber-esque in nature. No heated seats either. I replaced the fan belt with a Gates EPDM one two years ago, belt tensioner too, could it have worn that quickly?

    Mystery burning smell

2004 Sport, 117k miles Qualitative: Smells like burning rubber, more present from start to 10 mins and seems to go away entirely after 20 mins, more noticeable when sitting still rather than moving Quantitative: Coolant level and color are fine, temp. gauge never goes above the middle...

What did you do to your jeep today?

Replaced the glass lift supports (shocks) in the back. They lift (and stay up) so nicely now!

    How to: Install/Replace 3.7l Waterpump.

Right, but the write-up that started this thread AND the Haynes manual both specify RTV use. I plan on using the new gasket that comes with the pump, I'm just trying to figure out how important it is to use RTV as well.

    How to: Install/Replace 3.7l Waterpump.

Ok, the one I ordered from Rockauto.com (Bosch) comes with a new gasket, so RTV is only if you re-install the old one?

    How to: Install/Replace 3.7l Waterpump.

Going to replace my water pump soon. Excellent, easy-to-follow instructions here + videos on YouTube + Haynes manual = hopefully NOT a debacle. What kind of RTV should I use? I know different colors are for different applications and I don't want to use the wrong type.
