    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

lfhoward, I added my experience to the pole. My failure mode was a broken planetary gearset. It just let go with no warning. I had a Dodge Intrepid once that used the A606 transmission, which was an earlier front-wheel-drive version of what later became the rear-wheel-drive 42RLE...

replacement engines - what to look for

After a partial teardown of my engine, it will need a new cylinder head and block at a minimum. the #4 piston completely disintegrated, and the connecting rod and pin banged a hole through the cylinder into the water jacket. Never seen one fail like this. The valves for that cylinder all...

replacement engines - what to look for

Just purchased a 2002 Liberty with 259,000 miles on it. Transmission was rebuilt 2000 miles ago, new starter, alternator, A/C, and a bunch of other new stuff. Previous owner took good care of it but motor just broke a piston and needs replacement engine. I saw this thread and wonder what the...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

Got my Jeep back from the dealer today and I can confirm the quick learn procedure got the shifting straight back to normal. Without it, gear shifts were at a higher RPM and torque converter lockup didn’t occur consistently.

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

It has a piece of that aluminized fiberglass heat shielding on each line. The OEM lines had foam rubber but I live in the South, so having salt spray accumulate in that area is not a concern for me.

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

The Transmission cooler is aftermarket. Got it from Partsgeek. About $40. It fit well with only a little bending of the mounting feet, so it would align with the nuts in the radiator. I also got oil lines from Partsgeek, but had to return them, because the swedged ends of the lines would not...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

My local dealer has been backed up, so I have not been able to do the quick learn on my new transmission, but I’ve been driving it around my neighborhood to make sure the transmission fluid level is right with the new larger transmission oil cooler. My first observation is that the shifting is...

    Oil usage help

My 2005 Liberty 3.7 used a lot of oil when I first got it with 140,000 miles. It never smoked or leaked, and I initially suspected the PCV. Compression was 175-180 psi on all cylinders, so no **** by on piston rings. Problem was worn out valve guide seals. After replacing those, it does not...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

Today the Liberty is back on the road with a rebuilt transmission. I’ve been driving it around my neighborhood and it seems to shift great. Going to drive it to my local dealership next week to get the quick learn done to reset the transmission control module. So far no leaks from new lines...

Why are we still here? The legacy of the Jeep Liberty

Had a 1995 Cherokee for years and loved it. Replaced it with a Liberty in 2002. It’s a better car in every way. My son had a head on crash in it and walked away without a scratch. Got a 2005 Liberty next. It can run the full River Road in Big Bend NP at 50+MPH, fully loaded and completely...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

Got the reman transmission installed. It came with a new torque converter and 1 year unlimited miles warranty. I’m waiting on a new radiator, but after that’s installed my plan is to start it up, get the transmission fluid level right, then take it to my local dealer for quick learn process...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

Glad you could get your trans cooler lines out without pulling the radiator, Leeann; I could not on my 2005. Kind of glad I did have to pull the radiator, though; I found some damage on the bottom of it. Guessing something heavy flew in under the bumper and bashed in the radiator. Knowing my...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

Got the new transmission cooler today. It’s much bigger than the original one. 11 tubes vs 6, so I guess that will be extra cooling capacity, but I’m wondering if it makes sense to splice the outlet line from this cooler into the additional transmission cooler built into the radiator. The one...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

New trans cooler and lines ordered. Took old one out yesterday and you’ve got to pull the radiator to get the trans cooler out. It’s easy if radiator is out, but that’s always a messy job. Put a new crankshaft main seal in while the trans is out. Also found and fixed a bad rear driveshaft U...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

While I’m waiting on a reman ******, I’m going to replace the transmission oil cooler and lines. I asked a mechanic at my local dealer about flushing the cooler and lines and he said they stopped doing it years ago. He said it never was effective on parallel flow coolers, so they just replace...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

$hit. Turns out the planetary gears are toasted. I have a reman transmission in my future. I guess the lack of wear debris in the oil pan means it just suddenly let go. Jeep had 189000 pretty easy miles with regular maintenance. Kind of disappointing.....

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

Got my Jeep back from the shop and the codes recovered from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) are "incorrect gear ratio 2nd gear and 4th gear". The transmission won't even turn in neutral with the engine shut down (meaning you can't push the car with the engine off and transmission in...

    Jeep Liberty values?

Howdy JK forum, I just purchased a 2002 Liberty 3.7 limited with 4WD and auto transmission. It has a blown motor, but only cost $500. I’ve partially torn down the engine to see what went wrong, and so far I’ve found that all the coolant is in the oil pan, #4 spark plug is broken from some...

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

I finally have some time scheduled next week with a capable shop to read transmission specific codes. Will post what I find. I thought about replacing speed sensors first, but it looks like the front driveshaft has to come out to get access, so might as well wait....

    42RLE transmission suddenly won’t shift

Yep, that is the plan. I know the P0700 code is just a generic ****** fault indicator, so I figured the best approach was to start with a check of the fluid and look for any signs of a mechanical failure by examining any debris in the pan for iron bits that would stick to the magnet, or brass...
