Timing chain question and one other

Transfer case bushing Use the search function to find out how to replace the transfer case bushing for under $2. A plastic bushing from Ace Hardware and a e clip to hold it on are all that's necessary.

    oil leak

Valve Cover Gaskets I would replace the valve cover gaskets. This is a very common leak point and not too expensive. I replaced the VC gaskets on my '03 with Felpro brand for under US$50 (doing work myself). If not now, the valve cover gaskets will need replacement eventually.

    e-rad fan wires really hot

Hot wires Hot wires are due to something pulling too much current. Could be defective connectors - corroded or damaged. Could also be the fan motor bearings failing or internal wiring causing the motor to pull too much current. When wires start to melt the insulation, something is wrong! You...

    Starter Trouble

Agree.. M38 Bob is right - starter solenoid. Your Jeep is warning you it needs a remanufactured starter, so listen up. Otherwise one day it won't start and you will have to pay for a tow to a garage to have it replaced. So act now - replace it yourself or get it to a garage to have it done.

    Universal Antifreeze

Question If a customer insists on putting in a cheaper oil than that required by the manufacturer, do you put a warning notice on their receipt that customer insisted on installing cheaper oil than that required by the manufacturer and that this could possibly void the manufacturer's warranty...

    Electrical system surge/instability

Yep! Yep, go with NGK's. My '03 3.7 has a label under the hood calling for NGK plugs and even specifies the part number. I would not use any other plug as Liberty's seem sensitive to plugs.

    Need a mechanic...

Starting Over Jaxom, you have our sympathies on having to start over. It is tough at any age but especially at 50. Forum members, can anyone in the St Louis area lend a helping hand with Jaxom's Liberty? Perhaps a steel rim spare tire or help with other repairs? Let's remember there is more...

    Electrical system surge/instability

#6 misfire I would replace the #6 plug with a new NGK to remove it as a suspect. I once had an AC plug with cracked porcelain new from the box. Didn't notice it until I fired the engine and got a miss. If it isn't the plug or coil, then get a test light to plug in the wiring harness...

    Electrical system surge/instability

Hmm.... I would disconnect and clean all the grounds on the vehicle. I had a similar problem on a Honda and found it was a corroded ground. Then, I would pull the fuse on the aftermarket stereo to see if the pulsations stopped. Aftermarket equipment sometimes leads to strange things. Two...

    Oil leak under Jeep

things to check I had a Mopar oil filter start leaking oil on the differential, so check the oil filter. Also check the oil pressure gage just above the oil filter as they can leak. Also check the fluid level in the differential to make sure it has the correct amount of gear oil.

CRAP- may have just replaced a transmission for no reason...

Question With a broken timing belt don't you tell the customer that there may be more damage to the engine beyond the broken belt? Also there is much published information as to which engines are interference and non-interference, so the customer can be told what to expect. Sorry, but...

CRAP- may have just replaced a transmission for no reason...

Diagnosis Garages are a business that must get paid for work performed to survive, including diagnosis. I find that diagnosis is a big part of repairs unless a part failure is obvious. We all know we get what we pay for. What does upset me is when I pay a shop for diagnosis and it is wrong...

Throwing allot of transmission codes don't know where to start.

Codes '03 Liberty's used 45RFE transmissions up to Feb 26, 2003 IIRC and used 42RFE trans after that date, so look at your vehicle build date to see which trans you have. Then look at your trans to see which one you have as this will affect the repairs needed. P0740 - torque converter circuit...

Replacement TCM I have had good results with a PCM from Flagship One on eBay. You can look them up as they have a web site and I believe they re-condition TCM's too. I got a lifetime warranty on my PCM for $138 on eBay. The same PCM on their web site was $199 so check out their eBay price...

    03 Sport engine noise

Safety... The rod or screwdriver to the your ear is a classic analysis tool. However it has always scared me. What if I inadvertently touched a pulley or belt with the engine running? I bought the HF stethoscope with rubber hose to the ear or used the rubber hose method. Better to be...

    Key falls out of ignition

Keys Welcome to the forum. What year is your Jeep? What color is the original Jeep key? Black OEM keys do not have a chip and do not have to be re-programmed. Grey OEM keys do have a chip and will have to be re-programmed. My 2003 Limited Liberty has a black OEM key and does not have the...

    New Tow Hooks

Tow hook location Sounds like tow hooks on a Liberty are not robust. I see where they are mounted and the mounting points don't look too strong. If one has to put a serious pull on a Liberty to get it unstuck, where else can tow ropes be attached? Is there another stronger tow point than the...
