    Overhead Console, Anyone?

Great forum No offense taken. I picked up on the humor. I love the KJ forum for the knowledge and good natured sparring. I am a 72 year old retiree who is having a ball resurrecting a badly ignored Jeep 4x4. My 71 year old wife is pushing me to finish as she wants to go off-roading.

    42RLE - One Tough Transmission

Thunk Yes it does thunk at about 30mph when downshifting to 2nd. Will post the results when I change the sensor.

    Instrument Cluster Light Replacement

The light for my temperature gage on my '03 was burned out. Bugged me as it is dangerous to drive without knowing the engine temp. Replacement steps are: 1) Remove drive side grab handle - (mine were held on by 7/32" hex head screws. Used 7/32" deep well socket as could not find my 1/4"...

    Overhead Console, Anyone?

Questions... Just an ignorant plowboy from Georgia trying to learn.... Thanks for your patience. But I am trying to give back by sharing what I learn working on my Libby.

    42RLE - One Tough Transmission

Hmmm... I too am an elcheapo but have decided to rebuild if the input sensor doesn't do the trick. The reason I suspect the input sensor is that code 0740 compares engine speed from the PCM to the input speed of the trans and trips if there is a difference when the torque converter clutch is...

    42RLE - One Tough Transmission

42RLE follow up... Finally cut open the clogged trans filter that caused the 2003 Liberty not to move at all. Found lots of clutch material. Bad news. I had changed the filter and fluid dropping the pan only (no flush). I drove Libby 250 miles and dropped the pan again and found small...

    Overhead Console, Anyone?

Temp Sensor Thanks for the replies to my questions. They are the best answers to an internet question I have ever posted. What models and years EVIC are compatible with a 2003 Liberty? Any 2000 and up Liberty, Concorde, Grand Cherokee, 300, Dodge Intrepid? Are the 2003 Liberty's already...

    Overhead Console, Anyone?

My Liberty has the standard overhead console - lights only above the mirror. Is it possible to replace this with the overhead console with compass, temperature, and lights? I have seen some in salvage yards with these features and a moon roof switch. I would just leave the moon roof switch...

03 KJ Fuel Pump replacement ?

Lines to Fuel Module MarkJ, when you say push in on the blue and white connectors, do you push in from two side tabs 90 degrees to the length of the fuel line or push in on the end of the hose parallel with the length of the line with a tool like used on Ford fuel lines? Please give more...

    Critical Rear/Front Axle Maintenance

Was just at the Jeep dealership and the service manager commented that Liberty's are one tough vehicle. He said he services several with 250k to 300k miles with original engines and trans and still going strong. The only weak spot he said is the rear axle if the owner runs them low of oil. He...

Misfiring on Cylinder 4 and 5

Coils... Electronic parts suffer from infant failure. Happens early in the parts life. These two coils may be infant failures. As recommended, switch positions to see if the misfire follows. Probably not plugs as they have been good for 300 miles.

    Thrilled with Replacement PCM!

Just bought 4x4 Liberty and she had a P0601 code - bad Power Control Module (PCM). I looked all over the net and found prices with flash from $100 to $238 for a "rebuilt" PCM. The $100 unit had a 30 day warranty but I wanted one with a "lifetime" warranty. Every vendor of rebuilt PCM's had...

    Leaking Valve Cover Gasket

My '03 Liberty was leaking oil badly from valve cover gaskets. I assumed both were bad and bought a Felpro gasket set for both. I changed the passenger side as I could see where it was leaking badly. Seems the exhaust header cooks the gasket and welds it to the cover. When I went to change...

What did you do to your jeep today?

Tune up... Liberty with 174k miles. Rough idle, miss when driving. Changed plugs and air filter. Believe plugs were original factory NGK plugs as they had 0.100" to 0.106" gap versus original 0.040". Can't believe Libby would even run under those conditions. Owner #2 totally ignored...

    Climate Control Knob Repair

My climate control knobs had cracks going down the side that were illuminated at night. I thought to get replacements at a salvage yard but every one in 16 Liberty's had cracks. Knobs were functional so why bother? Because it bugged me. What I did: opened the cracks wider with a pocket...

    2004 Liberty P0300 Multiple Misfire

Thrown Rocker Arm? 3.7's and 4.7 v8's can throw the rocker arm out from under the cam thereby de-activating a cylinder. No codes. May or may not make a noise. Problem is hydraulic lash adjust not keeping pressure on rocker arm. Look up on the net. There are a couple of videos on YouTube...

    Dangling ground wire?

Warning!!! Do not ignore a dangling ground wire! The current will seek a way to ground and will do so in strange ways. Once had a Fiat 124 Spider with broken ground wire that grounded itself through the clutch cable and caused erratic electric glitches. Also had a Fiero GT that grounded...

    Discolored Coolant Overflow Bottle?

Connections... Just concluded the discoloration in Libby's overflow tank is discoloration from the HOAT coolant, not rust. Why? Because the overflow tank in my Saab uses the same HOAT and guess what. Its overflow tank is stained the same tannish yellow color with no rust. So the coolant...

New used 04 kj, few issues

Small miss? A miss can be caused by the 3.7L throwing a rocker arm off a valve. Would be a consistent miss on one cylinder and is usually accompanied by very rough running. You can Google this problem. Not likely your problem if it is an intermittent small miss, but mention it just in case...

    Discolored Coolant Overflow Bottle?

The coolant overflow bottle on every KJ I have seen is stained a yellowish tan color. Is this caused by the HOAT coolant or is this from corrosion in the engine? The discolored bottle in my 2003 (newly used acquisition) KJ bugs me but I won't replace it if it will just happen again from the...
