All KJ's have needed their lower balljoints replaced under recall at least once. The problem is in the design of the pocket which lets water into the joint and can cause premature failure.
The new design is better somehow. But since Chrysler went bankrupt I don't know what they will be...
I would guess what TBJ suggests.
low oil = no lube on the cam's and valves.
valve dropped or a spring broke.
Great deal for $900.00 once you get it all fixed up though.
The 2002 KJ engine was changed straight away because it was considered too noisy.
Also the transmission changed from the 45RFE to the 42RLE between the change over.
But again to me it's just a rumor because I haven't seen a newer block next to the 2002. When it comes time for me to need a...
Valve train failure cause your need for a new engine? [curiosity]
Rumor has it that the 2002 block is slightly unique to all other model years and as such can only be swapped with that singular year.
However - I've not seed the blocks compared side by side so I don't know for sure.
Is it a common problem: No.
Does it happen: Yes - due to high volume manufacturing [mass production] you can get some parts that will be bad.
As long as the gear set was repaired by a competent [most are / some aren't] mechanic than you are not going to have problems with the spider...
Welcome to the site!
Since the KJ is new to you it is best to begin by changing every fluid you can. Starting fresh with all the serviceable items means you know exactly what the vehicle has in it. It'll be a tad on the pricey side but the piece of mind you get in return should be very...
Don't think that seafoam in the intake is needed at 30K miles. It's only my opinion but I did a seafoam at 60K and didn't get very much smoke burn off. That lead me to believe that there must not be much carbon build up on the intake side of things. Now fuel line and crank case could be...
I used to work at one of those Valvoline Oil change shops when I was a kid. I can confirm that the ATF+4 drum is only filled with ATF+4. It's delivered in a seperate 5 gallon bucket, then transfered into a drum where it can be filled into the flush machine.
What the VIOC guys can't do is...
Please keep updating this thread...
As one of the few remaining stock 2002 KJ's on the planet I am planning on a set of these shocks for Christmas this year. And while anything is better than OEM, I would like to hear your experiences before I lay out the $$.
As ROF stated: The KJ (and all Chrysler's) need ATF+4 transmission fluid. Anything else and your transmission explodes in about 10K miles.
The KJ's are known for the clunky transmission. It's part of their personality.
Today's weather is even worse... wet roads and horrid wind.
Make sure the body shop checks out the mount on the frame extension where your brush guard mounts. That area probably absorbed all of the energy.
Indeed they are...
So far I haven't worn through mine like I would on a cheaper set either so they are very durable. Trap all kinds of salt and slush in the winter.
You could find the one tire with the most tread left on it and use that plus your spare on the rear end as long as you have an open differential. That ought to get you through winter.... Be aware that having one tire spinng faster than the other will cause accelerated wear on components.
You can read up on this thread Firestone Destination A/T - Product Review and see my update and report after about 30K miles to get an idea of what to expect.
These are great tires....
