Coolant vapor 'smoke' pouring out of exhaust manifold

Yes, I'm keeping a close eye on the coolant level so I can top it up if it burps out some air. I did use the bleed screw after changing the sensor and topping the coolant back up though, so I'm hoping that would have taken care of most of it.

PCV Valve on Oil Filler Neck

I had a similar problem with a leaking gasket and a bad O2 sensor on my old 2003 Liberty 3.7l. It turned out that the oil was dripping down directly onto the O2 sensor, and that caused it to go bad. However, by the time it went bad, I had already replaced the gasket, so the source of the oil was...

Coolant vapor 'smoke' pouring out of exhaust manifold

Good idea, thanks. I must be losing coolant from somewhere. I had to top it up with about 8 oz to get it back to the cold fill line, and I'm ashamed to say I don't know whether that happened suddenly, or slowly over the year I have owned the Jeep. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it and see what...

Weird clicking noise on cold start

I'll start by saying that I am in Wisconsin, so it gets VERY cold here. I have this same issue with the engine making all sorts of horrible rattling and tapping sounds when first started in cold weather. My theory is just that it is so cold that the oil is too thick to make it around the engine...

Coolant vapor 'smoke' pouring out of exhaust manifold

I think I may have just spilled coolant on the exhaust manifold, because when I started it up today, there was no vapor coming from the engine bay whatsoever. The tailpipe is still blowing clouds of vapor, but looking around, all the other cars around here are doing the same thing. It's REALLY...

Coolant vapor 'smoke' pouring out of exhaust manifold

Would that then collect on the exhaust and vaporize?

Coolant vapor 'smoke' pouring out of exhaust manifold

Making a new thread, because I think my P0177 code was merely a symptom of a much worse problem. I initially thought I wasn't losing coolant, but it appears I was - I was looking at the 'cold fill' line when the engine was warm. I swapped out the temperature sensor and topped up the coolant...

Check Engine Light with Code P0117. Doesn't appear to be overheating, and temp gauge seems to be working fine.

That's interesting - I'm in Wisconsin, and it has been exceptionally cold lately. The wind chill has been as cold as -16, and I have noticed that it is taking longer for my engine to come up to normal operating temperature. Can I safely rule out overheating as the cause? It seems unlikely that...

Check Engine Light with Code P0117. Doesn't appear to be overheating, and temp gauge seems to be working fine.

I was driving home this evening when my CEL came on. I stopped at Advance Auto and borrowed their meter. There was only one code set, and it was P0117, which is apparently the coolant temperature sensor reading too low a voltage. My coolant level is fine, and the wiring to the sensor also...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

Just in case this helps someone in future, I can confirm that it was in fact the inner tie rod. The ball joints for the inner tie rods had a liner of some sort of white plastic (I guess PTFE or delrin or similar). The joint was worn enough to be moveable by hand, but there was no actual play...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

There has been a new development. I went on a longer than normal drive, so the sound was happening pretty good by the time I arrived home. I also happened to have someone around to help me. Again, it's difficult to pinpoint because the sound reverberates throughout all the suspension...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

I did try moving it around with the wheel and brake removed when I suspected the ball joints, though I didn't think to use my stethoscope. I didn't notice anything that seemed out of the ordinary, but I don't really have experience, so it's entirely possible that I missed something. I also...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

That's a good point. I didn't think of the wheel bearing, but the first thing I suspected when I noticed the problem was loose lug nuts, and I imagine that's a similar problem to a worn bearing. That might explain why it only happens when I have been driving for a while too - takes a while to...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

That diagram is extremely helpful, thanks so much. In your opinion, which components actually present a danger should they fail? I know the ball joints can be catastrophic, but those are already done. I imagine a failed tie rod could also be dangerous, and they are pretty inexpensive, so it may...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

No, it only happens when steering left, whether in motion or stationary. It never happens when steering right or going in a straight line. I have replaced both the upper and lower ball joint, so it's neither of those. The only joints remaining are the CV axle and the tie rods. The outer tie rod...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

No. I have tried, but it's difficult to reproduce the problem, so catching it at the right time when I'm in a position to jack up the front end is tricky. I'll certainly try though. The creak/knock sounds like an unlubricated joint with a lot of weight bearing on it, so it would certainly make...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

I'll try to take a look at the steering rack bushings, though the sound really does seem like it's coming from the wheel well. So hard to tell though, even with a stethoscope. Is it possible that it's my inner tie rods? I imagine worn joints there would start to creak as they warmed up from...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

Ok, I have replaced both the upper and lower ball joints. Both appeared to be in good condition, and replacing them made no difference to the noise. The outer tie rod ball joint looks ok too, though I suppose that would be the next thing to suspect. It does have a grease fitting, and I filled...

Creak/knock from driver's side wheel when turning left.

Yeah, i just watched a video. Doesn't look too bad apart from having to reach that bolt with an extension. I just took the wheel off, and tried using a lever underneath the hub. The boot for the upper ball joint is definitely cracked, but I couldn't see any play in the ball joint - it just...
