Oh, and here is a write up (thanks Kirk) of installing the now discontinued Reese front hidden hitch on a KJ:
https://kirkanddonna.com/kirk/2004/08/09/front-hitch-install/
As you can see this one uses 3 mounting holes on each side which would make it quite a bit stronger than the TJ/YJ one but...
So this is the TJ/YJ "hidden" hitch I'm considering for my KJ:
https://www.draw-tite.com/product/65048_front-mount-receiver
I like that one better than the Curt version since the shackle mounting points are on the very outside and there is a decent chance they'd stick out where the existing tow...
You can also make your own from off the shelf parts. I've done it for race cars but never my Jeep. I think you could put together something from these:
Edit - I had looked up M14 stuff but pretty sure the Liberty (at least my 02) is M12 - revising my wishlist as follows...
I'd like to install a front hitch on my 02 but don't want to hurt my approach angle so the low hanging Curt one won't work for me. The Hidden Hitch would have been perfect but they don't make it any more. I'd want it to exit the bumper behind the license plate and I'd just remove the licence...
yep, you're right ikuo78, regular right hand threads - I've worked on too many cars the last few years - I swear at least one of them had left hand threads, Ford? Subaru? Mazda?
Here is what I use to hold the pulley while I crank on the nut with an adjustable wrench:

Be aware that the big nut is reverse threaded - righty loosey, lefty tighty!!!
Also, store the clutch vertically - I...
I have not, but they're saying all the things I'd want to hear when buying an engine, and the price is right, as long as you have a good core to give them. The only thing I don't like is the rather stingy 3 month warranty. I'd search for reviews on independent review sites and if those look good...
I agree with Celticlady 100% here. Salvage engines and transmissions are a crapshoot - I've put 3 salvage engines in other vehicles and 2 of them failed within a couple of years. I rebuilt the original engine in my Liberty and it failed within 3000 miles - turned out the machine shop I used did...
You 100% have a Chrysler 8.25 and you definitely don't have a Dana 35. The 8.25 is a much stronger diff so this is good news. Hopefully you didn't buy that Dana 35 cover?
Agree on the gasket - a really nice thick rubber one comes in the WIX kit - I spent over an hour cleaning the old silicone off the pan flange and the transmission flange. I did put a thin smear of silicone on the pan flange to get the gasket to stick in position as I was having some issues...
Are you 100% sure it's a Dana 35? U2Slow figured out that Dana 35s only came on Liberties in 2002. If you have drum brakes I believe it would indicate you have an axle from a 2002. Can you post a photo of your differential?
When I searched recently it seemed like there was some confusion re what sump filter to use for the 45RFE transmission - some said the 4x4 filter was different than the 4x2 filter and others said they were the same. I just got my WIX transmission filter kit in the mail and it came with a really...
Good price (I paid $135 shipped). If it's anything like mine (Chrlysler 8.25 version) it might complicate you attaching your skid via the mounting holes though since the bolt holes are inset. Mine also starts bulging out right in the middle of the bolt holes which would make it really tough to...
Ah, gotcha re the D44A. I appreciate that my Miata and Fiat Spider are mostly aluminum (sub 2500lbs is where I want my sports cars) but I'll take cast iron and steel on my Jeep wherever possible. I guess if I ever get hung up on my 8.25 I'll look for some way to get it to slide over stuff...
I googled Dana 35 Skid Plate and it seems really strange that nothing (other than a cover guard) shows up. Let us know what you come up with. I can see how the u-joint and rear of the driveshaft could get damaged on a big rock but that also seems like a very low probability situation. The...
I have an early drum brake model - it has the Chrysler 8.25. Also, since the 4cyl KJ is the go-to donor for 4:10 gears for the Chrysler 8.25 I don't think there is necessarily any reason to think 4cyl KJs got Dana 35s more than 6cyl KJs did.
I just did some googling and it does seem that when people say pinning they actually mean peening, which would be what I describe above with the punch. I had imagined a pin being driven through the seat into the head as some type of fastener but that doesn't seem to be a thing - I'm going with...
Apparently there is - in that link I provided above flengines4less says "Valves Seats are secured to ensure that this won’t be a problem in the future". When I had a cylinder head redone I asked the machinist to "pin" the valve seats since that's what I had read you want to do. However I've...
Your KJ Liberty has a Dana 30a in the front - most Dana 30 that came in other vehicles are different because they have a solid front axle. The Liberty does not have a solid front axle because it has independent front suspension. One of the other big differences between the 30a and the regular 30...
