Blew a speaker, now what?

I blew one of the Infinity speakers in my Jeep about a week ago. I'm not sure if I should just replace it, or install something else. I'm not big on sound systems, but I do like my stereo.

Any thoughts?

Any salvage yards around you Shaffer?? You could check that first while you are deciding?

Maybe someone on here has one from when the upgraded?

I thought I'd be able to pick one up off eBay fairly cheap, but after a quick search, I didn't see any.

Most dealer websites seem to want $125-$157 for a new one. That's kind of steep.

Might go see what Wally-World's got tonight just for fun. If not, then possibly a junkyard like you say.

I went to Wal-Mart and for what they want, I think I'll find an OEM replacement.

The speaker that blew, didn't really blow. The cone just detached from the outer speaker housing. I put a bead of 100% clear silicone on it for now until I can find a replacement.

I have the exact same problem, driver side front door. It didn't exactly blow, when it hits at certain tones it detaches. Having premium system with amps dont really help much in getting walmart cheapos either.

Don't go with a Wal-Mart cheapo, Crutchfield is having some awesome deals on Kenwood and alpine speakers, get a 6 3/4" speaker, the ones I'd recommend are at this link

They can handle way more than any receiver you have, and if you want extra they can even handle a 4way amp. If you don't like those look around on there, they have awesome prices, at least better than I can get anywhere local, lemme know if you want I think i got a $20 off code from my last order.

The silicone seemed to do the trick. No more crackle, crackle, crackle.

Since I'm just considering this a temporary fix, I'm looking towards the future when either another one goes, or the same speaker fails again.

Do the OEM Infinity speakers have a crossover and amplifier build into them? From what I've read, they do.

Yes they do. What type of silicone? TAP?

You should ask Timmer about the OEM Infinity's as he's dissected them. I think they only have a cross over in them...no amp.

According to this website they do have an amp built in. I'm seen other places that sell them stating they have a built in amp also.

As for the silicone I used, it was just 100% clear silicone of the tub-and-tile variety. Nothing fancy.

When I applied it, I pulled the thin fabric cover off the face of the speaker and applied a 1/8" bead between the outer foam ring and stamped steel housing.

I originally attempted to super glue the foam ring back to the housing, but that wasn't a good idea. The super glue melted the foam ring like gasoline does to a styro-foam cup. Not good.

After I let the silicone dry for twenty-four hours, I plugged the speaker in and cranked the stereo. It seemed pretty flexible and seems to be holding up okay. Mind you it's only been a couple days.

Do the round covers over the door speakers just pull off, or what? I want to try the silicone trick before spending $ on speakers.

Nope. Remove the whole door panel to access the speakers. FWIW the silicone fixed mine permanently. I never had another problem with.

My idiot sister and her then-husband borrowed the hooptie when they were moving. When I got it back, both front speakers were blown all to hell. Mine has the built-in amplifiers too. I installed a set of speakers (pioneer, if I remember correctly), and simply zip-stripped the amplifiers to the speakers. It sounds alright, but not as good as the factory speakers did. The sound balance just isn't right. Sometimes you have to turn the bass all the way down, depending on the song, and how loud you want to play it.

Heck I blew a 2 speakers in my KJ and left it like that for a year and a half! Fade the music to the front speakers if a rear one is blown or vise versa, until you get it fixed. I recently got a whole new Pioneer Audio System upgrade. Sounds great!
