The timing belt broke when crusing down the road. What's the chance that valves are bent or not?

Shop wants $450 to install new belt and water pump - then try to start the engine to look for more damage. Is this the correct path or should the head be pulled now to look for bent valves or other damage first?

Other potential damage to look for?

Looking for the least expensive path to fix the problem correctly.

80,000 miles

Thanks!

Do you have the I-4 engine or the V-6 engine? The V-6 engine doesnt have a timing belt.

If you were cruising down the highway the chances that a valve is bent is probably very likely. Hard to tell if a rod is bent.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The 2.4 gasser engine is not a interference engine, but damage to the valves can occur if the rpm's was high enough. The valves on the 2.4 are so close together that they can touch if the belt breaks, they will not hit the pistons no matter what but they can touch each other.Might be wise to have the head pulled and the valves checked,as it would suck to replace the belt and damage the new belt if the valves are bent.Sure it's more $$$ but better to be safe the sorry in the long run.

If you have the CRD and the belt broke just start looking for a new cylinder head as it's f**ked.

The 3.7 V6 does not use a timing belt but 3 timing chains.

Thanks for the reply.
It is a 4 cyl. going 30mph and the engine quit. Tried to restart it and then coasted to a stop.

Thanks for your reply. What is a CRD?

80,000 miles, I wonder what the scheduled replacement for the belt it? Probably around that mileage.
I am glad I have a 3.7 gasser, they seem to last very well if they are maintained and 3 timing chains, this is stronger, but expensive to replace as well.
I guess our chains are life of the motor with no scheduled replacement?

80000miles!!!:shakehead:
Hell should be done at 60000 tops. ANy more is just looking for a :buttkick:

Nobody leaves a cambelt run longer than 100000km (60000miles ish) here. The Fiat empire recommends 80000km tops (50000miles) for a belt for Alfas etc. I would do mine at 80000km intervals especially if I had the CRD!

I have a 05 with the 2.4 gas motor and my timing belt went on me. It did not break but had many teeth missing from the belt so ultimately died on me. Did not damage anything. Timed the cams correctly put new belt on fired right up.
Pain in the butt removing everything to get to the belt but pretty straight forward replacement.

Oh crap, I have an 03 2.4 but I swear my owners manual states the timing belt says to be replaced at 90K miles along with the water pump of course. I was planning on saving soon and having the service done around February as I just turned over to 84k yesterday. This scares me. I wonder if it would be worth the money to pay the dealership to do or just buy the parts myself and make it a weekend project. I know the dealership will charge me out the ***** but I can get 25% off parts due to having a relative retired from Chrysler. Any input from other 2.4 owners who have had to deal with the timing belt yet?
