I ran across this thread over on LOST and decided to build a shelf of my own.

I used 3/4" MDF for the main shelf part which is pretty darn heavy, and 1x2's for the edges. I coated it with some poly before carpeting. I got the carpet from wal-mart for like $9.

As you can see, I didnt add a back to it like the OP and others; instead I just mitered the two side pieces.

As an added bonus, I used velcro to throw two motion sensing LED lights under the shelf as you cant see anything under the shelf if it's dark out.

The only light used in these pics were from the KJ's interior and the motion sensing lights.

These are the lights I have.

Any questions, just ask!

Looks great!! :)

Like the idea of putting lights underneath the shelf. Got one set of LEDs but they suck, they are not as bright as that!!

Nice job BMR, I know what you mean it's dark under the shelf. Since the lights are not hooking themselves up for me, I guess I gotta get in gear and mount some under mine too!

You did a great job!

And the motion sensing lights were a great idea. I'd have never thought of doing it that way. (I'd have done it the complicated way... wiring it into the KJ's lights, but anyways...)

Cool.

I was actually ready to do the same thing.. I was going to install another dome light on the side panel of the cargo area. Then my dad suggested one of those round touch lights and it went from there.

Awesome job. It looks like it was supposed to be there. I really like the motion sensing light idea too.
