My check engine light came on yesterday for no explainable reason. The jeep is running great... no noises, sluggishness or anything. But I had the engine flushed, oil changed and cleaned the KN filter... just in case. The light is still on.... Is this possible a computer malfunction? Can it only be reset at the dealership or is there a way to do it myself? (the dealership is far)

thanks!

Disconnect your Negative battery cable for a few minutes. Should clear everything out. Might just be a fluke and never happen again.

if you want to see what the code is before you try disconnecting the battery, the info from this tread over at LOST may tell you why you are getting the light.

You said you had the K&N cleaned, who did it? Sometimes if you put to much oil on it, it can throw a code. I believe its the MAP sensor... or maybe its the IAC sensor... that gets coated in the oil and doesnt like it to much, not sure which one it is.

could really be anything. If it's running fine, and continued to run fine even when the light came on, its probably nothing major.

To reset it you need to either bring it to a mechanic with the proper scanner to reset it, or wait for the computer to go through a certain ammount of consecutive drive cycles. This certain ammount of time is predetermined and varies from one vehicle manufacturer to another. Either way, waiting for the light to go off on its own, or as mentioned above, unplugging the battery cable and resetting it that way, the code will still be saved on the computer's memory and need to be erased by a scanner capeable of doing so.

Thanks for the codes.... I didn't know about that.

It read: P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem

I have no idea what that means so I guess I should take it in.

p.s. I cleaned/oiled my own filter... that was fine.
