I realize that this may be late, as you mentioned that you were planning to tow today but my Liberty came with the 7-4 pin adapter. So did my Cherokee in 1998. OEM exhaust: how long did it last, replacement types, cost?
When you were looking at the exhaust system did you happen to grab ahold of it and see if you could shake it. It wouldn't be my first guess but it's possible that you've had an exhaust hanger fail.
