Hello: Recently met a guy who recently bought a 48 bentley coupe into which previous owner had transplanted 4.0 jeep power train and steering column and AC. All of it sort of works except the cruise control and power windows. No paperwork or history of how this came to be is available. The engine has mechanical distributor, not coil packs. Does that help us date it? It has a throttle body with cable to the accelerator, not drive by wire. The guy who did this had giant BENTLEY stamped in a chrome valve cover. Whether it came out of a grand cherokee or plain one we don't know. There is a fuse relay box on firewall where we might start looking for window problem. We cannot find a vacuum servo bellows for cruise...the cable disappears behind fender and firewall. What does that thing look like in a cherokee or grand cherokee? Thank you for help with these mysteries.

I watched a youtube engine swap in cherokee and noticed the alternator here has been moved to left side; in the youtube it was on the right under the AC compressor which is mostly in the same place here. That youtube was on a 99. Did earlier ones have alternator on the left as this is? PS is sort of in same place here as in the 99. We would like to get a date on the engine for ordering parts as the need arises since the parts stores need to know that first to put in their system.

That's impressive. I'm afraid your on the wrong jeep forum for much help with the old 4 cylinder engine, we all have the later v6 / diesels. Try a forum for the earlier Cherokee.

This is definitely a str8 6 from some year of old box cherokee or grand cherokee. This is not a 2.5L inline 4 transplant. This came out of a XJ or WJ then I guess but where is that subgroup on here? Sorry for messing up.

Sorry, there isn't one, this is a KJ / Liberty forum.

I realize this is KJ and we do own a 06 liberty limited of our own but I thought I was posting this query under "other models" that include the older cherokee with inline 4.0. If the moderator wants to delete this I guess he will do so. Or can the thread be moved to a place where people know the old inline 4.0 jeeps?

Thank you for this pic. The alternator position still seems different though. This helps. Is this your own car?

No, that picture is not my vehicle. However, I have worked on a few of these AMC engines.
That picture that you have provided, I am 99.9% sure it's an AMC straight 6.
The pic below is of a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Same engine however the position of the alternator and AC Compressor is on opposing sides side. What I' getting at is that engine was used in so many deferent vehicles with deferent layouts.

On the wikipedia site linked provided go down to the Applications: 4.0
Hopefully this can get you started in the right direction.

Thank you I had read that article already but you always see new points you missed the first time. This image still showing alternator on right passenger side but whoever did this mod on this bentley seems to have moved it due to space considerations.

In the original picture I posted from the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0 L
AMC Straight-6
The alternator is on the driver's side, the same as in your photo. That is the AC compressor on the passenger side. Same as your photo. The alternator on your Bentley looks like the original 90 amp for the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The picture below shows the alternator in the same location but a higher output alternator.

OK sorry I had misconstrued that. indeed our bentley motor and this one you show has alternator and power steering sort of jammed up against each other. I had not noticed this smaller alternator shown in the jeep. still trying to figure out what the cruise control vacuum actuator looks like or is it a rotary spooling and unspooling motor?

I have no idea what they have done. However the 1993-1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee SERVO SPEED CONTROL looks like the pic below. The 1993-1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee cruise control servo (part number 53009315) is located on the firewall in the engine compartment, near the brake booster. Deferent makes and models deferent locations. The last picture is the same part on a 93 Comanche located on the inside fender wall. I would follow what vacuum lines they have kept and look for the SERVO "control vacuum actuator".
