My 2005 Jeep Liberty (KJ) has a strange binding type noise or whine after a recent installation of new disks and pads. Seems to be coming only from the rear. The video below might help you understand it, but it is kinda hard to hear, so listen close right after I start the Jeep and put it in reverse. Your ideas would be appreciated.

Jim did you also replace the inner hat parking brake shoes, with a new spring kit?

I can get the parts numbers for you if needed. Where we should begin is getting the Jeep back at shop and have them put it on the lift in neutral.
Now spin the tires in forward & reverse, and see if the noise re-appears. If there is binding and wheels not turning smoothly/noise, the star adjusters should be set correctly.
There is an rubber plug to be removed and have shop adjust the spinner inside properly, and then see if the noise is still present in reverse after a road test.
The parking brake shoes are often worn out and rusted spring components wont help either, but shop may be able to tell from on the lift if the parking brake could also be a potential reversing problem.
Does the parking brake hold the Jeep well on reverse slope?

Just above "eek" is the oval plug that needs to be removed to access star adjuster.

Thanks for the parts info. I've ordered the shoes and hardware kit - I'd rather replace old parts than gamble on 15-year old parts - and will take it to my mechanic along with your info. I don't think the e-brake is in great condition after twice now discovering that I have accidentally left the brake on in the last several months. The last time I drove 4 miles before I realized what I'd done, which means it prob'ly wasn't holding very well.

Thanks for your help.

Jim

Jim since you will be installing a new Hardware kit, it is important to ensure they use compressed air, to blow the dust out, and clean the backing plates properly.
Hopefully no rust is present especially on any of the interior and exterior rivets !!
Use a quick dry rust paint after sanding if necessary. Mine were in bad shape.
Anti seize should also be used, even some on the spinner.

When I did my 06 the parking brake shoes had absolutely not pad and were just thin pieces of rust. But if your were not making noise before, you could have a sticking caliper.

I took the Jeep in to have them check that. You'd think if it was a sticking caliper, the noise would happen going forward as well as backward. It only happens going in reverse.

I was going to say it sounds like a sticking caliper too me too. It only happens when you back up and then when you pull ahead it comes loose. I bet if you parked and could pull ahead you wouldn't hear no noise at all. You also have to realize if you use cheapy parts they can make noise.

I never buy "cheapy" parts. I look for quality, then compare prices for the same brand and part numbers.
Well sad too say even quality parts can make noise, especially brake components. Try what I just and see if you can hear the same noise if you just pull ahead instead of backing up. I'd bet money it's a sticking caliper.

Mine makes a similar noise, sometimes going forward too. The guy I bought it from had just had all the brakes replaced, including the parking brakes - so he told me! He said the mechanic told him it would make that noise until the brake shoes/pads "broke" in. I've put about 2k miles on it since then, still makes the same noise. Maybe I better get under there and take a good look! Other problems with headlights & oil consumption to work out first! I hope replacing the parking brake stuff does the trick for you.
