Hi
I am new here . I just bought Liberty 2006 after a small front accident. They guy selling bypass the transmission oil radiator . I never had jeep before so didn't see that . I see the line are in the loop now so there is no cooling for transmission. I am in Chicago . When I was test driving it the trans temp light didn't go on. Can anyone tell me if I can drive like that or I need to put new radiator and lines now ? Transmission shifting ok and the oil is not black. I was hoping maybe for winter transmission cooler is not needed .

Thanks for help everybody

Personally, I would want to restore the trans cooler sooner than later.
The extra fluid and cooler is beneficial for a happy 42RLE auto transmission.
I would also install a new filter and ATF+4 trans fluid along with lines and cooler.

Thanks for answering. Another question . Can tires cause similar sound to wheel bearing ? Kind of humming sound . Its not changing with rpm but with speed . Thanks !

Yes for sure I am planning to do it in next two months . I seen cooling lines for about 100 usd in autozone not sure if cooler is leaking , maybe need to replace that too. Any idea how much that would all cost ? Here the rate is about 100 usd per hour . And I dont know any good mechanic her yet . Just moved here. I did change timing belts before and struts , ball joints etc. Is that easy job on Jeep liberty 2006 ?

Sure if they are very old and worn, or if they are mud terrains. I have a set of Duratracs with almost 100,000 miles that are LOUD. However, in my experience a bad wheel bearing sounds more like a weed whipper than the deeper hum of your tires. It will also get a lot louder and you’ll be able to tell which wheel the bad wheel bearing is on. If you can’t figure out a location at this point, it is probably tires.

The front axle intermediate shaft/bearing gave me a humming sound toward the end, I had lots of up and down movement on the inner CV shaft joint where it connects to the axle.

If the cooler isn't leaking and doesn't have obvious major damage to it (like a rock stock in the fins) I would just leave it. I only replaced my trans lines because they started leaking at one of the compression fittings on the rubber part. Not a hard job, just dont loose the clips, they are a little tricky to reach and re-install on the trans end too.

I would say the trans lines alone, assuming someones has not done it before, would take about 3 to 4 hours. Any good mechanic should be able to do it in 2 hours, probably less.

I would say do it yourself, like I said the hardest part is not losing the clips and getting them back on with the new lines can be a little tricky on the trans end because it is hard to reach up there and work with so little clearance/access. Have some ATF on hand to refill with as well, you will drain what is in the lines/cooler when you remove them, and some will drip out the trans ports (plug them with a piece of rubber/plastic cap or a wadded up plastic bag).

Hi
The cooler is not leaking because its not connected to the lines . The cooler looks ok I dont see any major damage . looks like the line in front just broke from the impact and someone connected then together with rubber hoses . Is the transmission temp sensor inside the transmission ? Is there anyway to check it ?With my OBDII scanner I can see transmission temp. When I turn the key light goes on . After starting the engine goes off . I guess I do the line first and see if cooler is leaking or not.

So there is more problems ! Engine light on
codes:
P0137
P0700
P1684
P3738
U0001 ?

So maybe bought a car with faulty transmission .. Car drives fine and shifts ok :(

I found some codes online . Do not understand what P3738 means . Anyone had this one before ?
I hope maybe its weak battery or some electrical issues. Battery looks kind of new but the guy clean the engine so hard to say . It starts in the morning when its cold ok .

Id get it fixed sooner or later also, being these jeeps having finicky transmissions good to have everything on the up and up.

Thanks ![/QUOTE] They can for sure, I have Kumho Road Ventures on my jeep and I find them pretty loud. I had a passenger that thought it was a wheel bearing and my mecahinc kind of questioned it too but its just the tires rumbling.

easy way to check a wheel bearing is to jack up that wheel so its not touching the ground and try to move it.

Move it up and down, left and right, in and out. You should be able to push and pull on it as hard as you want and it should be really solid. If you feel slop at all that is sign they are just about done.

Catching up.

Sorry, I guess I missed the part where your trans radiator was bypassed completely. If PO didnt do a good job of plugging the holes on it, I would not re-use it. I would be concerned about dust and dirt all up inside that cooler from being disconnected, all that junk is going to wash into your trans, not good.

Those error codes,

137 is an O2 sensor voltage low (nothing to do with transmission, and a quick search on this site will give you tons of info about fixing these)
700 is the generic trans problem alert
1684 is battery disconnected
U0001 is Can BUS C communication issue (ABS module to PCM communication)

Couldn't find anything conclusive on P3738 with brief googling and checking the service manual. Not really sure there

If everything drives and shifts fine, I would be confident clearing the codes and seeing what happens myself. Which codes come back and how quickly should help you understand what is happening. If the U0001 code comes back it could be wiring issue or a bad ABS/PCM module, service manual has some great info to help troubleshooting these codes.

Regarding the transmission, you will probably be ok to drive it this way until it gets a little warmer (especially since you are in chicago), but I would not leave it very long. The trans cooler and lines come to about $100 total plus shipping, depending on the brands you choose/ where you buy it might be more.

I am not a fan of driving with the ABS system not functioning correctly, you can, but you need to be aware of the risks associated and what you need to do differently in a panic stop.
