sidewall area, the rubber tore away from the metal ring inside the bead and tore the sidewall open making a flap.

also worth noting they damaged my newly powder-coated finish and the brand new metal valve stem was broken as well.

they also tried using wd-40 as lube on another one of the wheels, which seems to have permanently discolored the matte black finish.

That sounds a lot more like they actually destroyed the tire putting it on the machine BEFORE they ever attempted to air it up. In 40+ years in a tire shop I've seen several old tires blow, (never an undamaged new one). It's always the actual sidewall turns loose, or where sidewall and tread belts meet. The only new ones I've seen let go were, as you say bead area and caused by damage to the cord wrap over the bead wire. Operator error!

I'd love to see pictures of this. Either it would tie in with my damaged bead theory, or it'd be easy to tell it came from when the bead blew the F#$k off!

A harsh cleaner/degreaser such as Purple Power, Mean Green, etc should cut the WD-40 from the powder coat. Ask the applicator. Idiots choice for bead lube on new tire. (we do sometimes spray PBBlaster on bead/rim area of30-40 year old tractor tires when removing to replace)

Guys good news i found a place in albany, New York where the laws of physics cease to exist. the first shop said there was absolutely no way to mount these tires.

the one i just picked them up from did it in under 45 minutes without any explosions or tears in the fabric of space and time.
