I just got into my Jeep Liberty LTD 2002, started it and all of the sudden there is so much smoke coming out of my tail pipe. It kinda smelled like gas, it was white in color. My neighbor suggested that it might be my throttle position sensor. I used a code tester and it should P0123 and P1281 and P0442. Where should i go from here? Is it something that i can reset or do i just replace the sensor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Was it running rough? Is the gas cap tight? Coolant full and did the thermostat open at operating temp? The TPS is interesting and needs to be addressed, but I don't really see how it would cause the smoke issue. When mine failed, I got that code and was real flaky when accelerating. No smoke.

White Smoke in a small more clear like vapor is not that bad.
White thick chocking smoke is like over heated engine alarm bells going off to me, coolant into combustion/head gasket etc...turn off the vehicle immediately and seek pro help!

P1281 thermostat-is it the 1% stuck closed? What was the engine temp reading when smoking?

you had stored codes or new codes?

clear the codes and start from there.

thank you for the help, I did not run it long enough to get to temp, the smoke is more like a vapor not choking smoke like from a fire. it was running rough prior to all this happening, then all of the sudden i could not accelerate over 25 mph. so i get it home and the code said it was an injector #2, so i get pissed and let it set for a couple weeks.i bought a new injector and put it all back together, i go to start it up to move it and this is when all this started happening. used the code reader got all three codes and here i am. This jeep has been one thing after another. the guy at auto zone said I blew a head gasket. i don't think so, all the fluid is up to level, oil is not milky. I just wanted to get this thing to run like it did before. Ive owned it for about a year and it was a perfect running vehicle. Im almost ready to give up on this thing.

So there is still you have blown a head gasket. I had to rebuild mine about a year ago and my fluid level was still up and my oil was not milky. It only takes one little leak into the head to create a problem. The heads are aluminum on an cast iron block. It only takes overheating once to cause this to be an issue.

So there is still you have blown a head gasket. I had to rebuild mine about a year ago and my fluid level was still up and my oil was not milky. It only takes one little leak into the head to create a problem. The heads are aluminum on an cast iron block. It only takes overheating once to cause this to be an issue.

I really hope there is no gasket problems. It did over heat on me last year and i replaced the radiator,water pump, thermostat and fan clutch. The radiator was really bad with the rusty looking crust in it.

Autozone will have the loaner tool but you'll need to buy the fluid.

with the coolant system work done last year, did you use HOAT as your coolant?

I really hope there is no gasket problems. It did over heat on me last year and i replaced the radiator,water pump, thermostat and fan clutch. The radiator was really bad with the rusty looking crust in it.

Honestly it sounds like a blown head gasket to me too. I just got done replacing mine a few weeks ago. My coolant didn't appear to change but by the smoke I knew it was the head. Opened her up and sure enough, found coolant sitting on top of the pistons [emoji58]

I do not remember asking if they used the Chrysler coolant. Would that have any thing to do with the code?

If they mixed HOAT with some other coolant, sludge could build up in your system.
I would guess that could cause the P1281, IDK.

If there is a head gasket leak, you could see many codes due to the ECM not being able to deal with water in the cylinders.

either do a cylinder leak test or have a mechanic do it.

You said you overheated it once. you dont know if the prior owner did the same.
These heads will warp. IF you take it apart make sure the heads go to a machine shop to get rebuilt & milled. Make sure they do not use a belt sander on the gasket surface.

I am leaning towards taking this to the shop now, It looks more like a blown head gasket. I am so pissed off at this vehicle at this point. So what would be a reasonable price to place on this after it gets fixed (If I decide not to keep it). How much is a reasonable cost for the fix? I am going to call around and get this figured out. Thanks to everybody that has participated in this discussion.

Honestly after you get t fixed I doubt you would want to sell it. Went through the same exact thing as you and I about had it. But after I finished replacing the gasket, the jeep had a brand new pep in its step and I decided to keep it.

Sh** happens with any brand, replaced 2 head gaskets on my 2004 ford ranger due to a known design flaw in the 3.0s.

What you're doing is the best option. Call around and see who will give you the best deal. Just make sure it is a reputable shop. It's a big job so it's not going to be cheap unfortunately.

So I changed the head gaskets on mine and did it for right around $600. Now that was for some of the specialty tools as well as new oil and parts and rags. All so that I could do it the right way. Cost also included lunch for a couple friends that helped me out. I got quoted about $2000-2500 to have someone else do it as this motor is a bit of a B***H to deal with and no one really likes working on them. Got mine fixed in a matter of two days as the heads on mine were not warped. I also have lots of pics of the tear down if you need anything specific.

I have had the Jeep towed to the shop this morning. As it turns out, the mechanic gave me bad news today. the #2 plug was damaged.The ceramic was all cracked and pieces missing and the tang was pushed down onto the electrode. I don't know how that would have happened. Now there is no compression.I guess a new engine is needed now.

The engine is blown, all kinds of metal all the way up in the intake manifold. This really *****.
