I just noticed that I have a slight oil leak near my filter. My filter, a few inches above it, and the outside of the oil pan have a thin layer of oil. After I saw this I wiped off the oil filter, started the motor and saw a bit of oil enter the crimp around the base of the filter near the gasket. When I removed the oil filter the rubber gasket appears to be flush with the metal of the filter. Is that the likely cause or does the oil above it preclude it from being the source of the leak.

If it is coming from above the oil filter it probably is coming from the oil pressure sending unit above the filter on the block. Clean that area up with a de-greaser too and see if it is coming from there.

X2... This comes up all the time. Oil pressure sending unit is going. Replace before you budketize your motor...
