My '03 KJ is light khaki and has a dented tail gate. The tail gate opens fine but the dent is big and kind of bothers me. It can't be popped out or anything like that.

I found a somebody here locally that is parting out a white '02 KJ. He told me there's nothing wrong with the tail gate and he'll let me have it for $150. I told him I would look into how much it would cost to paint it and get back to him.

If I buy it and sand it myself, approximately how much would it cost to paint? I would just give the sanded tail gate to the painter and when he's done, I'll have a friend help me put it on. In other words, the painter would have to do nothing but paint it.

Thanks.

Your color is a fun one to match so unless you don't mind a slightly off colored swing gate you will need to have some other body panels re-cleared to properly blend the new paint in.The paint place does not care if you prep the part yourself(except mayco) and will charge you anyways since that is already included in the price for painting anyway.

If it were me. I'd buy it and take it somewhere and have them paint it. Then just put it on myself.

Most body shops would much rather just have you hand over the untouched panel and take care of it themselves to make sure it's done right.

I'm guessing it would probably only cost a couple hundred bucks to have that painted. Around here anyway.

The blending issue crossed my mind. However, since the C-pillars are the only same-color body parts next to the tail gate, I would think it wouldn't be that noticeable.

I thought about waiting to see if I can find a light khaki tail gate, but the chances of that happening are slim. And even if I did find one, it may not be a perfect match because the KJ it came off of was probably not on the assembly line at the same time mine was.

It's your KJ and if you can accept the color difference by all means do it.Just to add to the confusion there is about 100 different variations to your color(you'd be amazed on the # of different whites and even blacks there are:eek:).That's why if my KJ ever needs any body panel painted it will require the whole vehicle to be painted at the cost of about $9000,I worked in a bodyshop(painted my KJ myself) and can easily spot the differences(it bugs me alot) and I custom blended my paint(based of a Lamborghini color),plus my paint is seperatly insured anyways.

I second the professional standpoint on that one. The color would be a challenge but if you give them the whole vehicle then you stand a better chance of getting it. The prep is something best left to them also, since there are a vast range of primers and topcoats that can interact when crossed or dried impropperly, some of which will not be apparent for weeks or months. Leave it to the painting shop to deal with their specialty(I speak as one who does this for a living) and you will like the result. Go to a good reputable small shop for a better rate and good service. They watch their reputation a little closer(by my experience anyway) and will take care of any problems if you have to.

You've gotten good advice here but to answer what I thought might be your biggest concern, you could have 10 professionals reply here and all 10 would most likely have a different price. IOW, there is no set price to paint a tail gate door.
