Well yesterday when driving home she started bucking on me. I took it out of overdrive and she was fine. So I had to go out again and when I put it in reverse she started clank, clank, clank. I picked up some new atf+4 and a filter, and changed them this morning. Well after a few trips around the block to circulate everything i put it in reverse again to park it in the drive and Bang Boom! Now I have nothing. No reverse or drive. I had to put it in neutral and the Xfer case in neutral as well just to be able to roll her. I had it towed to the stealership, and they say may need new trans. Anyone know how long it should take them to replace it. I only have 54000 on it and should be covered under 7/70. I have a feeling they will try to wiggle out of it. Its my only vehicle so I do not beat on it. Ill fight them tooth and nail for the warranty work.

I don't know much about these transmissions, but maybe its electrical related. Pretty sure the ****** relies on computer signals and such...and you have low miles.

When dropping the pan, did you notice any shavings in the fluid?

Regardless of the outcome, I'd push hard for the warranty work given that's powertrain.

Sorry to hear that. I personally don't like the trans on the KJ. Mine does some weird things on a daily basis....downshifts are just crazy...then take offs from an intersection, well that;s a crap shoot to see if it slips or bucks on acceleration. I am waiting for my ****** to do what your just did someday.

Don't let the dealer away with anything.

dont go in ready to fight with them
play it cool and all "well s&^t happens" and they will fix it as soon as they can
we have had both of the CV shafts replaced on our KJ under the 7/70
they did give use some lip and rightfully so as both were busted by sticks off road and I neglected to get the boot's replaced but they still replaced the entire shaft
give them time but let them know your situation
or you can do like we do
send your wife down there with the kid in the car and have her tell them "it is making a clicking noise when I turn"
then when they tell her that it may be a few days she can give them a "but I need my Jeep to go to the store for baby food and milk"
then they may give you a loner to abuse ,I mean use, and fix it a little bit faster

remember that you catch more flies with honey than with salt

Sorry to hear about that... I hate to hear about stuff breaking! You're covered under warranty so there shouldn't be any issues. Just play it cool, tell them what's going on, and let that be the end of it. Don't get all aggressive, that is how people have issues and problems... then the police might get called too. You don't want to go to jail over a transmission, trust me. :)

Now if it was an extended warranty from some 3rd party company, then it would be a different story. I've never had issues getting anything fixed under a manufacturer's warranty.

Don`t get me wrong. I wont go in fighting and screaming. Ill get a lawyer to do the negotiating if necessary, or the BBB. I may only have an hours worth of time in 4WD over the 4 years I have had her, and never in the woods. I don`t want to go wheeling with it until its paid off. and a second car Only 7 payments to go. Before this the trade in value was around 9000. If I trade it in I would want as much of that toward the new one as I can get. Jeepin05: I only had the usual tiny metal grit in the pan, but not enough to get me concerned. When it happened it was sudden. Other than the worn suspension and TPMS light the powertrain ran like a top.

I remember reading somewhere that throwing the ****** into neutral while still moving at 10mph or so can make the ****** lock up too. I just can't remeber where I read it...here or L.O.S.T.

I did reset the computer. Whatever happened it felt str8 mechanical. like a broken gear. I only gave it a little gas when backing up when it went. I got no CEL either.

How long did you wait to reactivate? From what I have observed it takes a rather long dead time(disconnected battery) to reset. Several(5+ hrs). 1-2 has no effect. I still think it sounds like the computer gave it 2 gears in the wrong timing, hence a grinding interaction.
A coworker had a chronic problem with an allison automatic where it was doing that and it was traced to 3 solenoids operating out of sequence. In his case there was no prior work performed, simply a failure covered under warranty but he had weeks of intermittent problems until it was finally sorted out.
In your case it seems too connected to the prior maintenance, that's why I am asking. This is a topic of interest to me because I have an 05 also and am near 55k miles wanting to do a trans fluid change. It would be nice to know exactly what the deal is.

you should be changing your trans fluid every 36K
if not ,or if the dealer can prove not you may be S.O.L should your trans take a dump

it is threads like this that make me so glad we have the 45RFE

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Chrysler auto trans are a different breed, after a pan drop you really should have a trans relearn done, disconnecting the battery(for however long) is not the same.

From the sounds of it you may have some mechanical damage, don't rule out electronic failure either since there are sensors for the mechanical parts also. Then again you may not have trans problems at all,may be t-case related also but a bad torque converter and/or TC lockup soliniod may be at fault.

I'm willing to bet it's an electrical problem.

I had a '93 Buick Skylark that would start up and drive fine. As soon as the transmission would get warm the OD solenoid would lock up.

When coming down off high speeds, it would buck and stall the engine. The engine would start back up, but as soon as I put it in drive, it died. It acted exactly like the transmission was locked up.

Turns out, it was a common problem to the Skylark. $15 for a new OD solenoid and about a 1/2 hours worth of work and it was as good as new.

Now I'm not saying this is your problem, or that it will be a cheap fix, but they are both electronically controlled transmissions and the symptoms do sound a bit similar.

I really do hope it is something simple. I have never abused it. I have spent some time over the last day reading the thousands of posts on the web from people with the 42rle trans in their vehicles that have had it fail on them. Many of them from the onset of their buying the car. Dodge Nitro`s, Dodge Magnums, Chrysler 300`s, as well as Jeeps. I like my jeep for the most part, but if it doesn't get fixed I would not do the jeep thing again with the exception of a used grand cherokee with the 4.0 HO. Those were bulletproof

Especially with that 42RLE behind the 4.0....

Get one with a 4.7 and 545RFE if you go that route, man.

4.0s are "teh suck", as the interweb nerdz would say.

That is in a Grand right?
I have yet to meet a JK owner who had a TJ with a 4.0 and was happy with the power from the 3.8
most are getting fed up with "needing 4000 rpm to make enough power to climb a hill"
I have seen the 6 speed JK 4 doors stall on their way up a hill due to not enough gas but if you give them enough gas you end up going to fast

The difference is between the TJ and the JK is...weight.

The 3.8 and 4.0 have very similar powerbands ITBJHO.

That doesn't stop the 4.0 from being a sucky, leaky, POS.
