How NOT To: Fix a windshield ding.

Couple months back I got a ding in my windshield from a log truck I was passing. Well I decided to fix it before the cold weather came, today was that day. I was in the process of using the Fix A Windshield kit with its pretty straight forward instructions. It appeared the resin wasn't quite getting all the way in so I thought maybe give it a few taps from the back side. WARNING: Don't ever do that!!!!! I gave it a few taps and then I had 4 nice new cracks in my windshield. It resembled a cross actually. Fortunately the cracks were not too bad and I was able to use my Fix A Windshield kit to repair most of the cracks. I can still see them a little bit since I ran out of that resin.

It's best to pull a vacuum on the windshield chip then under vacuum inject the resin to ensure the chip is completely filled in.It also helps to drill into the center of the chip with a diamond engraving bit(via Dremal tool) to ensure a good path for the resin to flow into.


Can't tell I fix a many windshield chips have you? A good starter kit that is worth a darn starts out at about $2000 to fix windshield chips,a UV light is a must to ensure proper curing.

Most insurance company's do not hit you for any charges for having windshield chips fixed,and some you do not have any charges for a complete windshield replacement also.

My wife's 02 got hit with a rock and the insurance company (State Farm) said if the crack was as long as a dollar bill then she would get a new windshield...no cost. I stretched that dollar and got the windshield done the next day. The window company even went to my wife's work and replaced the glass in the parking lot in about 1/2 hour.

Yeah the dollar bill test is pretty standard across insurance companies, and I have zero deductible on my policy for glass

What ***** is I got two dings which both spread within hours. Kinda hard get a ding repaired when you're driving to a vacation destination. Eh well, guess I'll just get a windshield replaced.

Stone chips are repaired free of charge.
Costs us $200.00 deductable for other glass related damage such as Long cracks, side windows, etc.(also includes head lights, dash board cracking, and fabric/leather repair or replacement.
$300.00 deductable for other damages such as paint over spray!

I got a rock chip at eye level on the drivers side, just a bit after I had the last new windshield put in. I was going to get it filled, but another rock hit the windshield first.....about 1/8" away from the first hit. After I had those two filled in, another rock hit the window, about 1/16" from the first hit. The resin that had filled the first two chips stopped the rock from damaging the glass further.

The latest rock to hit my window was just below the roofline, and it was fairly big. I could see it bouncing up the road towards me after it fell off a truck. BANG. I'm just going to leave it for now because this windshield is nearly sandblasted too much anyhow....

my kj had an existing chip in it when I bought. it was under the wipers, so I didn't see it until much later. my insurance covered it with no questions asked. you can still see where it was, but they injected it with that epoxy-glue-type stuff. I've had the kj for almost 2 years, and the chip hasn't enlarged at all. no complaints.

FYI - I had a $200 deductible - and a new windshield from an independent shop (using OEM glass) was $150.
