I am interested in investing in a good trail shovel for my KJ. It would have to provide a multitude of uses ranging from camping to off road. Size is not an issue as I could mount it on my roof rack. What shovels do you guys use? Would the pick option on a folding shovel be a worthwhile investment?

After some brief browsing I have found...

That is similar to the one I bring when I am heading to the USFS areas. I think that one may be bigger, but the same general principle. It works well. After all, you're not planning on digging a trench with it, so it doesn't have to be some massively overbuilt tool. Mine is typically just for putting out campfires that either we have camping or others have left smoldering that we come across.

My experience with shovels is that they break. I've gone through 1 plastic shovel and 2 wooden handle ones. All, I can say is my next one is an all metal one! Also, if you want one for winter using a spade works well as you can dig through the snow and ice. But since you are from WI you may not know what real snow is. :D haha.

Oh and I should mention don't get one of those wimpy small blade shovels. The last thing you want is to have to dig yourself out of 4 feet of mud with a frkn spoon.
