Hi my girlfriend has an 04 with the 3.7l without the heavy duty cooling..just has a single radiator fan.. the fan only comes on when the a/c has been switched on..all other times it will just over heat and the fan never comes on if it sits for long enough..the temperature gauge seems to be working properly and the radiator and thermostat have recently been replaced..I even plugged up a new fan and it does the same thing..no wires appear to be messed up or anything..what could be the problem?

I got a CEL when my fan relay went a couple years ago. Did it in traffic and overheated very quickly. I didn't try my AC at the time to see if that would still run the fan so not sure this is the same as your situation. I think the relay was access through the driver side wheel well if my memory correct.

There is a fan relay on the drivers side inner fender well that goes bad. But sorry I cant find my picture of it.

I switched it with ac blower motor relay which was definately working and it didn't do anything

It's not the relays in the fuse box its a large - approx 3"x4" mounted on the inner fender well down low near radiator and beneath the battery box.

Here is a pic of an aftermarket one with cooling fins that I installed. (Behind the hoses). If I recall correctly the factory one doesnt have cooling fins.

Yes thankyou I actually did see that thread already..i did figure out the fan does work but it only decides to come on if the ac is switched on..but I'm confused now though. I'm wondering now if there is in fact annother relay for the fan other than the one in the fuse box or not

The blower motor relay and the fan relays in the fuse box have the same part number so that's why I switched them around to see if it made a difference since they r the same

The picture of the fan relay has a bolt hole so assuming it's not in the relay/fuse box. I'm leaning toward the fan being defective. Sounds like you lost one speed as per the thread. I'd run it with the AC on if that gets the fan going. You don't want to overheat that motor. Trust me I know from experience.

Way past that point..replaced radiator cause it cracked when she let it overheat...but like I said I already tried a new fan and it does the same thing let it sit and run for a while with the nnew fan and it would not click on unless the ac was on

Forgot you mentioned trying the other fan.

You may have been lucky with just the rad. I cooked my headgasket(s). My relay went in traffic, pulled over ASAP and never even red lined the temp. Immediately had a milkshake in the crankcase.

Maybe need to track down the possibility of a remote relay.
