On my way home from lunch today, I lost everything above 2nd gear and set the CEL. I put the scangauge on when I got home and it's giving me this:

P0733 - gear 3 incorrect ratio

Searched around on other jeep forums, and it seems that the general conclusion is that I just toasted my ******.

The transmission shifts rough, and I did manage to limp home going no more than 20mph. Is there anything I can check for that would rule out the worst case scenario of a new transmission?

Have you checked the fluid level? Ever changed it?

Tried resetting the code?

Since you have the god of trannys, as most people put it, then if its bad the world may be ending.....

Got a call back from the transmission shop before lunch today. No luck with it just being a sensor or something. Something is physically broken inside the transmission.

The ballpark estimate for the shop to rebuild/repair the trans is around $2700.

We got online and found a 2002 45RFE transmission in Indiana (4 hr drive) with 28K miles on it for $325. So the other options are:
(A) pick up the '02 trans and have the shop swap it out for nearly $1500, or
(B) pick up the '02 trans and do the swap in the driveway... saving the money on labor.

Regardless of what we decide to do, we've also decided to keep the bad trans that's already on my kj and take our time working to rebuild it the right way (as a spare).

I'm so bummed, it's sickening.

Sorry for the trouble and Im sure that feeling is awful.

I would personally go for the ****** out of the 02 and rebuild the current ****** but thats just me. Hopefully that 02 ****** doesnt have any problems.

Whats to say the $325.00 box in Indiana with 28K is any good?
I've been through this with a C-6 and after all the work to get it fitted... It was in worse condition than the one that came out of my car! (even though it "looked" better! Ah, what can I say... I was a dumb punk!)
Is there not a ****** shop in your area that can supply a re-man unit with a warranty? Or see if you can bring it to a high school or technical school who might be able to install it for less labour?

Just a thought eh!

Got a heads up from tjkj to check the valve body first before doing the transplant. So, maybe it's as simple (or not) as that.

That's what it is... the accumulator plate. (woot)

Gotta call around tomorrow to see if a replacement part is possible without having to order and wait for the part. Aaron found it at Summit Racing, not ebay.

I'm so impatient - I miss my jeep. sad2.gif

These pieces shouldn't be here...

I'm 99% sure that's the "end" of the dipstick. Am I correct?

Yes, that's correct. The bad part is the plate under the dipstick and to the left in the picture. You can see that's bent away.

I found the replacement part locally - I don't have to wait for it to be shipped to my house. Maybe I can get the kj out of the garage on Sunday or Monday.

What do you think ultimately caused the failure?

From what I've been reading, and from what I've been told, this accumulator plate is the 'weak link' of the 45RFE transmissions. The pistons put pressure on that plate, it flexes, and slowly work the bolts out. Once one of the bolts have worked out enough, it can cause others to break.

The aftermarket shift kits (with accumulator plate) use a thicker plate and add more bolts to prevent the flex. Add a little loc-tite to the threads for safety sake, and I should be good to go.

I hope this fixes it entirely though. I don't drive the kj very hard, so it's not a matter of use and abuse. I'm pretty easy on it in offroad environments too. Maybe mileage is a factor - who knows? I'm over 107K miles on my libby. I can only guess...

Is this something that can be fixed preemptively? Is it different on the 42RLE?

You could probably pick up the Transgo aftermarket shift kit for your 42RLE if you wanted to. I got the parts thru a distributor near here... check them out. www.transgo.com They have kits for both trannys... not sure how difficult this will be to change. Doing it tomorrow.
