Interesting starting point, but not all you need to know.

I think some actual wear & sludge testing would be a little more interesting.

Might be helpful to clarify what a "high" level of ash content is as it relates to sludge. I haven't seen any good figures for that.

Consumer reports did a test in 2006 on motor oils. Pretty much any oil that has the Starburst symbol on the container will perform with the same results. Additives are useless, and oil does not necessarily need to be changed every 3000 miles. Synthetic oils only save the consumer from having to change the oil more frequently, but no real mechanical advantage gained. The filter is what can make the difference though.
