I went up to Silver Lake dunes this weekend and went through some of big water holes with no problem. I did however bury the front end in one and soaked my air filter and lost a lot of power. The check engine light came on with a P0300. I took it back and let everything dry out, unhooked the battery to reset the light and it hasnt come on since. Its been 2 days. Should I be concerned at all?

P0300 is a random misfire, probably sucked just enough water not to lock up the motor. I'd do an oil change.

P0300 is multiple misfires, might want to check your oil to make sure it's not milky and maybe replace the plugs. Also might want to check the front diff for any water contamination if you got that deep.

Perhaps the water simply shorted out some sensors?

How would water in the crankcase cause a misfire code? If there was enough water to virtually seize the engine the water wouldn't magically dissapear. If the engine is running and idling normally now i doubt this. Your crankcase is seales - even fi your air filter got soaked most of the water would likely blow through and get show out the exhaust - unless the air box were completely submerged.

Its running like new since I let everything dry out. No code either. Thank god! I was freakin out! Had a great time on the dunes though! The Jeep handled it like it was nothing!

The dunes would be fun. I was up by Birch Run (St Helen) this past weekend on some state land. The KJ ate up a couple of very sandy hills - one very steep, the other not steep but very long.

The crankcase is not sealed, there are 2 crankcase breathers and the PCV valve all relieve the crankcase pressure.

I'm well aware of the PVC...most vehicles the PVC runs to the throttle body...and since air is comnig *out* the PVC water is not going to get sucked into it...unless the engine were shut off and it was left sitting submerged.

I was not aware of any other crankcase "breathers". Where are these located and where do they run to? It would be silly to have breathers for the crankcase located anywhere in the negine compartment in a vehicle warrantied to ford up to 2' of water.

The crankcase breathers are located on the back of the engine, the other 2 hoses running into the intake hose are the breathers.

On newer vehicles due to emissions the engines are "sealed" but not really,on older vehicles the breathers used to be on the valve covers and vented into the air.All vehicles have at least one crankcase breather, otherwise bye-bye seals and head gaskets.
