2002 jeep liberty 3.7 limited burning oil

Hi all, new to this forum and my old 02 jeep liberty!
I’m just wondering if burning about a quart of oil every few weeks is normal? I’ve heard about jeeps burning a bit of oil. I live in the bush and drive a LOT! This old girl has needed a few things since I got her. Just hoping I don’t have to dump MORE money into her right now.

Should not be burning a quart every 3 weeks. Is there any oil leaks under jeep at all?
Do you see blue smoke out the tail pipe when revved hot?
Could be valve stem seals.
Probably best to do an engine compression test on all 6 cylinders as well.

I just checked and it leaks like a drop a day. No blue smoke or anything though. Ok thank you!

mine burns oil. usually happens during accelerations so you wont notice blue smoke at idle. You'll smell it though.

I'd check the pcv system, the valve cover gaskets and the crank seal in the front.

My 02 is doing the same thing, but there is definitely some white/blue smoke while it's warming up. No leaks underneath though. I'm pretty sure a crank seal is a "big" job for a casual DIY-er like myself, but correct me if I'm wrong. What about valve cover gaskets? Is that a reasonable weekend job for a guy with standard tools and a little know-how?

If you are blowing oil, start looking for a replacement vehicle. I wasted a LOT of money trying to save my 2003 3.7L after blowing a ring. Absolutely not worth it.

I have a 2002 Jeep liberty Limited 3.7 with 125000 miles and it didn’t burn oil. Someone told me when they burn oil you should see dark smoke coming out the back.
In another vehicle, I had oil seeping so it didn’t drip on my driveway because it was landing on the engine
Look below your vehicle where you park a lot and see if you see oil spots
Then look around the engine and see if you can see oil spots

If you suspect an oil leak I suggest that you perform a U.V. Dye Test. This involves adding a U.V. Dye to your oil and driving it around a bit. Then using the supplied yellow lens glasses any oil leak will show up greenish yellow when you flash a light on it. This will pin point the source of the leak so you can address it.

If you are burning oil, check your PCV Valve and pipe for function. Make sure that the PCV pipe isn't clogged up with residual oil. You can also check compression of each cylinder. If the readings are low than your engine is either wore out or you have stuck piston rings causing the oil consumption. Pull your spark plugs and see if they are indicating burning oil.
