The old ones were clear, the new ones are smoked inside the housing with a crystal clear cover over the inner portion and a traditional fluted clear over the outer portion.

But then again to answer your other questions as I am not buying untested combos I have no worries about fitments. I'm on OE wheels so no worries about backspacing. Local shops tend to be more $$, if you know something is going to work the lower...
there were no auctions for all smoked....we'll see how they are. worse comes to worse I'll get smoked down the line (I also have the graphite metallic bumpers).
I was thinking about this this weekend....it would not be that hard to buy a new OE rear diff cover and weld on a bung for a drain plug. This (depending on price for new cover) could be a much cheaper option than the Rock Lizard rear cover assuming you do not need the added protection.
I recall the 6th being a huge pain in the rear on mine I had to single handed push the exhaust a bit to the side...does not more much...and couldn't use my socket set. was a while ago but I think I ended up using a wrench with a breaker bar.
