Hello from a newbie...
Welcome Mike. I am sure your will find this forum invaluable as I have. I also have a new-to-me 2005 Libergade (as I call it). I do most all my own work but never owed a Jeep before. The knowledge on this site has saved me $$ many times. Can't wait to see the pics.- MarkJ

I think he is talking about the catalytic converter, not your whole Jeep. Although, usually when converters age they get less efficient, they usually don't get hotter. Converters get hot from another reason, usually a too rich mixture. I suppose this may happen if the converter is telling your...- MarkJ

I have see a Cat get so hot that undercoating on a crossmember 8 or 10 inches above was running off like oil into a smelly puddle on the ground. (in this case it was a chevy pickup with the timing way off...)- MarkJ

Alignment
I would definitely junk yard a rear diff. But before you do, know any good body shops? They can straighten unibodys to get 4 wheel alignment back in spec. I don't know if they can straighten your rear diff but I would give them the chance - old one is trash anyway? They can chain the diff...- MarkJ

I wouldn't make any guesses without checking wear parts like bearings, etc. Need to find out if the engine shows signs of overheating. Pay particular attention to the heads for warping, cracks, etc. If there is no sign of water in the oil then your bearings and such may be fine as long as it...- MarkJ

Of course this is just a guess: Low coolant for some reason. Air in the cooling system may cause the heater to not blow warm and if low enough may cause the gauge to not register because the sensor is not in the hot water. Engine then overheated and maybe mixed coolant with the oil from a...- MarkJ

What are these plugs for?
Got it. Looks like the accelerator position sensor is used on the diesel only. They use the same harness on the gas engine and just tape it out of the way. Look closely at the schematic of the connector I posted - look at the title... (Diesel).- MarkJ
