I'd agree with changing the coolant if it's been more than 2 to 3 years. Mercedes has been using the same HOAT coolant in their diesels since the early 80's, and on my '87 300D they recommend changing it every 2 to 3 years as a normal service item. If the wastegate on the turbo is vacuum operated, then yes. Could be that the dealer techs were right in that the wastegate isn't operating - but were wrong as to the cause. If they used those hard plastic lines for the vacuum lines, those are notorious for getting brittle and cracking with...- retmil46

If I remember correctly, Euro CRD's from that year had a vacuum actuated wastegate and egr. Pic you posted looked to be the vacuum controller for one or both, and the sucking sound you described is most probably a vacuum leak. Could be you've got one or more bad vacuum lines and/or a bad vacuum...- retmil46

Questions about an '06 diesel
Looks like the PO knew what he was doing - I see a Provent CCV filter to keep the oil out of the intercooler and air intake - and that POS factory fuel filter has been replaced with an excellent Racor fuel filter setup. Beg to differ with respect - at least over here in the U.S., the 3.7 L V6 Libertys came with an additional mechanical viscous clutch fan if they had the heavy duty factory tow package. I stand corrected - my friend e-mailed today and said the mechanical fan on his 02 V6 is a 11 bladed beast. Diameter and other dimensions so far check out. I can get one online for around $50. Looks like I'll be doing one more mod to the CRD.- retmil46

Hmmm... from what I understand, the gassers only have a mechanical fan if they have the complete tow package - otherwise it's strictly an electrical setup. Agreed on both points. With a 2.8 L and a vacuum fuel system, you could end up sucking in enough air such that the engine will die from fuel starvation at the worst possible times, or if it gets bad enough not even start at all.
