Before you spend any more money I would get the simple things checked. Check the tire balance, alignment and make sure there isn't any okay in the front end like ball joints control arms etc

Either buy the retaining clips or just run a small bead of silicon inside the weatherstripping. It'll hold and you'll be able to take it back off still if needed.

Drive it and see if it comes on..yet again if it is the thermostat it could be p1281 engine cold too long which would be a bad thermostat..see if he is down for letting you take it somewhere to have it looked at if you're not familiar with it.

Just get some rustoleum undercoat. Need about 4 cans. Cheaper. Either use sand paper or wire wheel to remove any rust then use brake clean and spray it I recommend using rust reformer before spraying the undercoat on
