I have not experienced anything like that in mine except for when the traction control takes over. That said, I can power right through the brakes in first gear, so I don’t believe there is any kind of torque modulation.
I bet they do, but I’ve found that can be mitigated by dumping the clutch.
In all seriousness, I’ve never felt like I was lacking too badly in my ‘07. It seems like the traction control is the only issue.
Got the wife a new rig yesterday. 2009 Mercury Mariner Premier V6 AWD. It’s actually on the basic side of premier. It has leather heated seats, factory subwoofer, accent lighting, and upgraded audiophile software in the radio. There’s still a lot to look at.

I started it and let it run for 45 minutes, or so. We’re going down to -30°F tonight, so the block heater and oil pan heater are plugged in. My work van, however, needed a jump today after lunch. We finally got it started and it ran from 1:30-5:30 when I got home.
However, a new problem reared its ugly head today: transfer case noise while 4 hi is engaged. Kind of an intermittent grinding. It’s the 241 case. I haven’t been able to get eyes on anything yet.
