Jeep is officially headless. Got the driver side head off tonight thanks to the stubby ratcheting wrench advice of TJKJ and Tom. Worked like a charm. That's a tight fit. Hopefully you can't see all the mouse crap in the images.
Now off to the machine shop to see if they can be rebuilt... and...
From pic crank is obvious and oil pressure sensor is just above and a bit right of the oil filter. It can leak and run a long way. Common leak point. I didn't tale a pic of my timing cover where the crank seal had a slight leak but I'd check the oil pressure sender first.
The PCV is on the side of the oil fill spout. Those things at the back (both sides) are additional breathers. Why they didn't put the PCV back there is beyond me. Would have eliminated all that sludge from the front in the cold weather. I guess there is a relocation procedure out there for that...
You sure it's the crank seal and not the oil pressure sensor? When I disassembled the front of mine my crank seal was leaking slightly but the old drippings from the oil sensor was still evident and nearby.
Like TJKJ said the puller works like a charm. That was the exact one I have.
It's quite the knuckle buster in there. Can't wait to see what that HG looks like. Even though I'm pretty sure the passenger side was the bad one, might as well change both since I've gone this far. Gonna have alot of scrubbing with all that sludge and I've found the secondary tensioners were...
Thanks! I was going to go with a standard 10mm but 1/16 of a turn at a time would take hours to get that thing backed off far enough to slip it off. That'll give me an excuse to add to my tool collection. I always wanted a set of ratcheting wrenches so I'll just have to get stubby and regulars...
Pulled passenger side head today and it wasn't all that difficult but looked awful. Lots of sludge and the gasket was toast also must have been leaking some coolant into cylinder 4. Pretty sure it was the culprit that was leaking into the oil also. Bolts were quite variable in their tightness...
Geez that was close to home. Surprised I missed it since I usually read that website every day.
I agree completely. Sort of like Mark McGwire and his androstenedione.
The GM thing on the other hand is complete crap on their part. Doesn't surprise me at all. I swore off GMs when I got...
I'd have to say it can't hurt to change it. Better safe than sorry.
I'll be pulling my heads this weekend. No choice now as I've got a slow leak I found this week. Noticed a rapid drop in coolant and lots of foam in the PCV tube even after a two hour drive. No short trips in the cold weather...
I've got a Borla dual cat back. Not sure it'd be louder than what you have at idle but really roars when you get it up to about 4000 RPMs. :emotions33:
Ha, I just did the same but wasn't pulled over. We typically get the warning ticket around here. If you show any officer/sheriff/trooper and they sign off that its fixed you send it in and no fine.
Sorry to revive a sort of old thread but I'm trying to figure out exactly what a "bad tensioner" would sound like. This is what I suspect I have but can't find a sound byte. I'm thinking bad secondary but haven't had a stretch of decent weather to pull things apart. Mine is a chatter in front...
Glad it turned out well for you. I'm still trying to figure mine out. I crawled all around under it over the weekend and the noise really seems like top-end. I think the knock is actually from the top near the back by #6. Too much echo in my garage and to much loud music in my youth. :rocking...
Brushed a half foot of snow off of it and warmed it up. Not sure if it was the snow around it but couldn't hear much of my pesky knock. Just the chatter of the tensioners and a little tap up top. If the weather ever warms I'm gonna pull the top off again and have a look.
