Hello,
I own a 2005 European KJ 3.7 liberty.
It is equipped with a 42RLE gearbox.
The vehicle has 127000 km, I lent this vehicle to a friend, and the following happened to him:
On the freeway, he heard a clatter and the engine warning light came on, along with the transmission oil temperature warning light.
A parking area was 500m away and he stopped.
From what he told me, he was in fourth gear and still had traction.
Once stopped, he shifted into P and turned off the ignition.
Then he restarted, the engine light went out, as did the oil temperature light, but he had no more gears, forward or reverse.
We took the vehicle back to my place on a flatbed truck and looked for the cause of the problem.
We lifted the KJ's rear axle so that it had both wheels free. The axle is limited-slip and the oil has just been changed.
We put in a diagnostic kit, but it doesn't tell us much, because first of all it can't find the 42 RLE gearbox, and only has the 45 RFE in its database.
When we manipulate the gearshift, the software shows us that the sensors open and close.
During our tests, we noticed several things: The engine runs normally and climbs in rpm up to the red zone when in P, R and N, but when in D, 2 or 1, it doesn't go beyond 2000 rpm.
When in R, there's a whistling sound in the gearbox.
At one point, while testing with the vehicle raised, I was forcing a rear wheel into rotation and suddenly it started to turn, with the engine revving normally.
We tried reversing, but nothing happened, no transmission, and once again no driveability in 1, 2 and D.
Living in France, it's hard to find repairers for American vehicles, especially for automatic transmissions, and the two Jeep dealerships I know refused to take my vehicle. I clearly understood that they weren't interested in repairing a 20-year-old vehicle, and one of them even told me that all I had to do was scrap it.
Which for me is not an option, because there's no rust, and everything works perfectly apart from the gearbox problem.
So I don't know where to start looking for the problem.
I should add that the transmission oil is light red, it's ATF+4 and the oil change was done 5000 km ago.
Any ideas?
Thanks

First off, don't know exactly what is going on. Have a 2012 with the 42RLE myself, just had to remove it to replace the torque converter, but never had anything like this happen. Sprung a leak out the front and turned out to be the torque converter shaft where it goes into the torque converter was cracked. Sure sounds like the internals are broken to me. You could try buying a rebuild kit, but depends on how mechanically inclined you are, sounds like you might know your way around a tool box. But to be honest, not something I would feel comfortable tackling and I've successfully rebuilt a few things (engines, rear ends) myself. Lots of moving parts in an automatic. Could you call around any junk yards, salvage yards, and find a transmission from a Jeep that is there due to other problems? May be your best bet. I mean, you can get a rebuilt 42RLE transmission here in the States anywhere from $1300 to $3000 but I have no idea the hoops you'd have to jump through to get one shipped overseas, or how much that shipping would cost.
