Sounds better. So how would I know if it’s too far gone? Will I see the grooves and teeth worn?

99% of the time the u-joint is replaceable. If the yoke on the driveshaft is too far gone (bored out) a driveline shop can replace that...

Clunk on acceleration can also be a bad driveshaft u-Joint, typically the joint right at the rear differential.

if it is coming from the rear, it is usually the Upper Control arm in the back - attaches from the body to the top of the punkin...
