ok,

I have done a couple KJ water pumps already from watching Youtube videos. Each video states to drain coolant by removing lower radiator hose.

two weekends ago I did two KJ radiator installs and drained from the drain on the driver side.

Why do you not drain from the driver side drain for a water pump? or can you and Youtube us missing this?

Doing another water pump on a KJ today

That location is notorious for never sealing properly again.. that's why I didn't drain from there.

I was taught never to touch the block drain plugs unless you were planning to pull the engine, for the reason Luke gives. Why mess with a drain plug when it's easy enough to pull off the lower rad hose? You have to disconnect that hose anyway to change the rad, so using the drain plug is actually adding an unnecessary extra step :)

Draining the radiator by it's drain or pulling the lower radiator hose does not drain any coolant from the engine since the lower radiator hose(engine side) has the t-stat which prevents draining of the engine unless you pull the t-stat.

When I do a 3.7/4.7 waterpump I don't drain anything, just pull the pump and let what comes out come out.

x2. I didn't drain anything besides what came out of the pump when I took it off.

Maybe I'm the only one but 99% of the time when I am doing a water pump its time to either flush the system or the person hasn't flushed theirs so I drain/flush and fill , no use doing it all twice

When at work we always sell a coolant flush with any cooling system repair so no need to try and get all the coolant out for that repair.

Me personally I go through radiators so fast my coolant is always fresh:smokin:
