Gas mileage

What happened to the forum about getting better gas mileage. I drive 50 miles one way and I drain an 1/8 every time. Suggestions?

Just enjoy the drive! My Jeeps have never been high mileage cruiser just a FUN vehicle. I suggest a Subaru which I own two if mileage is a priority.

All anyone suggests is to replace spark plugs (copper core and listed in engine bay), synthetic fluid changes (except diffs), quality air filter (stay away from K&N as they let in too much dirt), and go easy on the gas.

You could get a free flowing cat-back exhaust and replace your throttle body with one from a V8 with the 4.7L engine.

Hypertech tuners do not seem to be popular and will not work without sending it to them for special software if you have ever had a PCM update.

Jett chips will only work for a short time until the PCM learns around it.

I have been curious if anyone actually has a Hypertech tuner and what results they have gotten. I have read that other vehicles have paired a Hypertech tuner and a Jett chip together and gotten even more power but it was a muscle car.

I looked into getting a underbody tray but it would trap the heat from the exhaust and engine with the transmission and transfer case.

I am thinking about getting a sporty car to kick around in back and forth to work and use the Jeep on the weekends, in bad weather and on camping trips.

50 miles per 1/8th tank sounds pretty good to me! 400 miles per tank full would be awesome.

I believe the big problem with the CAI is they actually do a worse job than the OE filter box at providing cold air. I had an AEM on my 02 for a while and it was fine but the only thing it did was give a little more intake noise and suck hot air. BUT I've run the same type BruteForce kit on my Ranger for over 100k and never had the temp issues because of the shielding in the kit and the location of the filter in the engine compartment. Lots of fresh air and pretty well isolated from the rest of the engine compartment. Really never had problems with dirt if you vacuum the filter off every few thousand miles. I have a pre-filter too and did change original dry filter after 50k.

I also heard the Hypertech tuners were not compatible with the Chrysler 3.7 or 4.7. I've never heard about the reprogrammed PCM to get one to work. I have an SCT for my 98 Ranger and love it. I'd love to have something like that for the KJ so if you have a link to a compatible one, do share...

I also heard these things just relearned when running a Jet chip so the gains are brief.

Not really sure about the benefits of a Subbie for gas mileage. I think my 01 outback is worse than my 05 KJ...

First you have a Jeep, not a high performance " car "
No aftermarket muffler, CAI or chip is going to get you more than a very few horsepower.
Use it for what it is, a great 4x4 and enjoy it
As far as underbody tray , get good skid plates, a lift , good tires and enjoy

I bought my Jeep (used) in Virginia and two days later drove 380 miles home on a single tank of gas.

Then I started bolting stuff onto it and... :Bye:

For what it's worth, I drove a Geo Metro for six years and got a legit 50 mpg highway. Between it and the Jeep, guess which one I've enjoyed driving more? ;)

The MPG on my Jeep is atrocious. I do have a lot of extras on it though which doesn't help. Im hoping these new coil packs and O2 sensors will make an improvement.

So quick calculation based on 70l tank, I'm told the 02 kj should have 70l, comes to approx 25 mpg or around 9l/100km.
Best I've ever seen in my 07 kj is 21mpg, or approx 11l/100km.
So you are not doing too bad.

So the Thrush muffler has gotten a lot louder lately and I think I am beginning to bother the neighbors. Probably more that I leave for work at 6am than driving during the afternoon/evening. Since I do not remember seeing a big improvement in performance I doubt that I will miss it much.

A friend of mine has an underbody tray for his Tacoma and loves it. I thought about getting one but the company he got it from only makes them for trucks. Since the only skid I am missing is the transmission, I should be alright.

Thanks, Tom. I have been driving performance cars for such a long time I am still trying to break away from the tuner mentality. I am thinking about regearing to get more low end torque but that is not going to happen this year.

I think My KJ gets 15 mpg with a 40 mph tailwind. Wont even discuss in town mileage.
It's a reliable 4x4 that takes me camping/fishing, can pull a trailer like nothing, works for me!
Really best mileage comes form smaller lighter cars. I did not buy it for the fuel mileage!

Ive accepted the poor mileage of these Jeeps. It does get a bit annoying sometimes as all my mates drive diesel 4WD's such as Mitsubishi Tritons, Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Hilux. They all get great mileage. Mine is the only petrol in the group. I always have to carry at least 1 spare 20L jerry can of fuel with me when we do trips away.

I was driving a V8 Discovery before the KJ, she was drinking around 20L/100KM so my Jeep feels frugal at 11 - 16 l/100km.
I'm happy. Didn't buy it for economyanyway.

I easily get at least 19-20 on the highway ( at 75 plus ) and have gotten as high as 23.6 through the " mountains " of Pennsylvania , thats lifted , larger tires, aftermarket bumpers etc , and of course regeared
But for the type of vehicle it does great

Couldn't agree more Tom, as stated in my previous post, the kj is good compared to my last vehicle.

Before the early demise of my KJ it got 6-7mpg's city and could squeak 18mpg on the highway at 65mph(engine turning 3000rpm's) but that was weighing 6400lbs turning 35" tires with 5.13 gears ranging from 6200 feet in elevation to 12,000 feet in elevation.

Closer to sea level(1500 feet or less) it was a total sports car,would roast the rear tires at every takeoff.

100% stock engine and trans.

Mine does better at 80+MPH MPG wise but given the 70MPH speed limit, I think a $300 ticket and increased insurance might outweigh the fuel benefits. Unless the officer buys "It's for the environment" :happy175:
