Hi all,

I'm not new to the forum, but I haven't been too active on here for a long time. I own a 2004 Columbia KJ that I've neglected, and while I know exactly what to get to fix my jeep, I'm still a little lost as to what tires I want. Let me rephrase; I don't know what tires are ideal for my needs, because it's not something I've delved too far into until now. My tax return will be back in a week or so, and I have these wheels lined up. I'm thinking the 16x8 with 4.25" BS. Stock wheels are 7" wide, 5.5" BS and if I'm not mistaken but do correct me if I'm wrong, with the new wheels I'll have a much wider stance. I'm throwing a 2" budget lift under it until I can get a good suspension lift, so I need to know the biggest tire I can install without too much rubbing. I don't need rock crawler or mud bogger, I need all-terrain, still getting to work hell or high water tires, but with some beef too.

First the 8 inch wide is going to cause extra issues, stay with 7 inch wide and 4 inch or right about there for backspacing.
Now as far as tire size, it depends on how much your springs have sagged already since you are using a spacer lift. If it is at say 19 inches now and you'd end up with 21 then you could squeeze a 245-75-16 on, BUT if it has sagged an inch or so like most then 245-70-16 would be about it

Cool, the 7" wide 4" BS are cheaper too. Thanks for the heads up. I haven't installed the budget boost yet, they'll be ordered along with the Black Rocks. The jeep does have 190k on it, so I'm sure the (factory) suspension is sagged nonetheless. A little bigger than stock is still bigger than stock, so I'll just wait until I got the dough for a good susp. lift. I'll need new tires around then anyway. Thanks for the info man, and quick reply.

Measure from the middle of the wheel to bottom of the flare in front and let us know what it is. I've had them come in here with 75,000 miles and sagged over an inch before so would be interesting to see where your's is sitting at

Looks to be about 17" give or take......it's got 215s on it right now so no judging haha. I had to make due with limited funds last year to pass inspection so it is what it is. Does it sound saggy to you? Should I at least replace springs before I pop those poly lift spacers under it?

If you are at 17" from hub to flare you are sagged 2 inches from stock height.. If you go with a budget lift you are probably going to have a very unenjoyable experience. That much sag, your suspension is done with already..

Yup just figured out that much myself lol. A little more researching went a long way. I can get coils to replace the saggy ones, about the same cost as the budget lift and kill two birds with one stone, no? Something like the Old Man EMU coils? Or will I have to replace the struts as well?

Yes. When doing springs its recomended to do shocks so that you don't destroy your new springs :)

Thanks for the info guys, I'm not a mechanic but I know my way around my Jeep no doubts. Looks like I'll be going the used tire route for now, and repairing/upgrading my suspension instead. Sorry this wound up in the tires section lol.

Could look in to a set of Treadwright tires instead of going the used tire route. If looking for something cheap. Something like the guardogs

Nice, I'll check those out......but I just remeasured in the daylight, and it's 18" in front, 19" in the back. I had to hold the light and the tape when I did it last. That's from the center of the Jeep logo on my wheels straight up to the bottom of the outside edge of the fender flares. Is this a game changer or no? I was still going to grab some of those EMU coils, I've heard decent things, and I'm willing to pay 300 a set. Priorities, priorities.

Still over an inch below new stock height so suspension is shot
OME or Ironman springs are both good. Ironman are little cheaper ride is very comparable to the OMEs have ran both on mine

I'm in between the financial point of more than being able to buy a new stock suspension, but not quite a good suspension lift, so saving for the latter would be the wiser thing to do. I'm going to get some good used tires at a car shop in town this week to replace my racing slicks (ha) and to get by, but this time I'll be able to at least get something bigger than rubber bands. 235s were on it when I bought it, I remember thinking those even looked kinda small so they were probably /70s. I want to squeeze 245/75s at least on those black rocks with the 4" backspacing, but I know I have to lift her to do it. 2" or so I'm guessing, and since my old suspension is fubar then I might as well do it up. I saw that Rough Country lift BS, researched it for 30 seconds then realized it was BS. This is something I'm just going to have to work for.

It's really refreshing to see someone do their research and willing to work for it!

Keep up the good work and keep asking questions!

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I just spent a good amount of time on Rocky Road Outfitters website, they have some good stuff. I need to stop drooling over parts and go to bed, we have MSHA meetings tomorrow and should get some rest lol.

If three people consecutively call it crap, then it's probably crap. I was more or less just in awe of all the stuff I could buy for this jeep. Still on the hunt for the right suspension though.

Read, the right suspension has been discussed one million times
Just depends on how high you want to go
