Have any of you seen or heard of this?
So the question would be, would it fit and work in our KJs? They're technically Dana 30, right?
We have a Chrysler 8.25" rear.
(EDIT) Sorry, I was speaking of our front axles.
"The 27 spline Dana 30a, also know by Chrysler as the 186FIA, has always been the only front axle available in the Jeep Liberty."
Clearly calls it a Dana 30
Clearly it is a Dana 30a , not a 30, not even close and a lot of those places will sell you gears etc for a 30 and then guess what, they will not work
Many have ran into the same thing over the years
Granted, and I've not taken mine apart (yet), but from everything I read, the only difference is the longer pinion (and the aluminum housing). And in my experience at least, doesn't necessarily mean the gears won't work. Now I've got some more research to do. Thanks for the input.
was discussed years ago but go ahead
Why would you laugh at people doing research and learning? You don't have to be a rude. It isn't like I've read every post on the forum, so excuse me for trying to figure something out.
I also saw someone definitively say the KJ didn't have a removable front diff cover, and I know that isn't true, so I prefer evidence.
Tom, I saw in two other posts you recommended the 4.10 ring and pinion from Crown specifically for a Dana 30 and the locker for a Dana 30 to people that had the OEM D30A, so I'm wondering now why you insist there is such a significant difference? If you suggested using the pinion for a 30, why would this not work? And I'm not being snarky, I want to understand why the two statements seem contradictory.
LOL no only Dana has the ring and pinion for a 30a
Crown DID SELL the Dana 30a ring and pinion at one time, not sure if they do know or not
It does have BUT you have to remove the front diff to remove the cover, so yes a lot of people thinks they can not
My history with the G80 'gov bomb' in Chevies would steer me clear. Not a durable unit.
That said, a D30 carrier on its own fits the D30A. Even a lunchbox locker for a D30 fits; BTDT.
The G80? They grab, or don't grab... or blow up. Something like this:
I'm done listening to someone, after search for another topic, in 2017 and 2018 they recommended the G80 for the front. They can't make up their mind. And given that I've now seen videos of it being done successfully on the youtube, it's clear that someone isn't the expert they think they are.
u2slow: The answer is, they DO blow up, if one is an asshat and do burn outs with them (since they are installed in the rear of Silverados). But if one operates them under normal use, they are very reliable. And given that people generally do not do 4wd burnouts, it shouldn't "Gov-Bomb."
You Tube videos, worthless as most Facebook posts
Have fun, I'll stick with actual lockers that are made for the 8.25 and D30a
So let me post a reply on YouTube and suddenly I have more credibility ?
good to know.
YouTube. The home of all things done half ass by people who feel the need to show the world they are special.
and forum posts from people that contradict themselves are more credible, how?
Because ironically the forums for this specific model Jeep are full people who - guess what - work and modify this specific vehicle. Shocker huh?
Edit. lol I read what I posted and I sound like a dick. But honestly It sounded funnier in my head.
I've seen too many blown up, helped sell the replacement used diffs, and helped rebuild the core/exchange diffs to sell again. All caused by burnouts? Who knows? Best selling diff type in my 4 years of autowrecking (Chevy & Ford trucks.)
Not for me thanks.
