I have a 2004 jeep liberty and I replaced the valve cover gaskets last year and then after about 8 months or so it started smoking again from under the hood on the passengers side worse than before.
So I replaced the valve covers and gaskets and it’s doing it worse now and I can’t even start it to let it warm up. And when I sit still it smokes bad under the hood and stinks through my vents and now it’s starting to smell while I’m driving it. I’m really lost as to what else it could be. Any suggestions?

Check you cam position sensor. Its on the passenger side near the front of the head. If you remove the filter box its helps to see if its leaking

The smoke is coming from under the valve cover and it looks like some sorta ring/cap that looks like it’s screwed on.

I had a similar experience.
The grommet that came with the replacement gasket I bought was for a plastic head cover.
It was 1 to 1.5mm thin.
I had thrown away the old grommet so I bought a new plastic head cover and gasket.
The gasket on a steel head cover is hard and has a single lip on both sides,
but on a plastic head cover the gasket is embedded in a groove and the lip on the head side is flat, giving me a sense of security.

Yes the old one that was on there was metal and the replacement I bought was plastic with the gaskets already on it so I’m not sure what’s best to do

It's a good idea to wash the exhaust manifold with water once.
It's possible that a lot of oil got on it when you replaced the gasket.
I used a parts cleaner with a long nozzle to clean the underside of the manifold as well.

When you had the valve cover off, did you notice if was bent or warped around the edges? Also want to make sure you get the right gasket set for plastic or metal covers. I had one that had the same issue, and I used the black RTV inside and outside of the bolt grommets and also on the gasket itself. It's difficult after you have RTV all over it but just be careful putting the cover back on. Best of luck to you!

I ordered the right parts and when they came they was the plastic covers with the gasket already on it and then the grommets was separate
