Since I am going to be getting a hitch installed next week, I'm wondering what location/s are safe to hook up to for emergency towing without a hitch hook. I have a rear tow hook, but from my understanding, is not compatible with a hitch installed.

Is their an advantage for shackles over hooks? The drivers manual says the stock tow hooks are rated for 5000lbs and some of the aftermarket hitch hooks are right around that area as well.

The only advantage that I can think of is the tow rope wouldn't be able to come off the hook when you back up to yank again, I am getting my trailer hitch thanks to Chrysler N46 Recall Monday and am ordering this hook, Rated to 10,000lbs and solid reviews!

I like d rings. Won't slip off. Harder to get hurt. Well unless the ring comes loose.

I use an old ball mount with a D ring in the hole. If you already have one laying around just add a D ring and good to go.

Mine was already 7/8" and had a shackle to fit :) No drilling needed.

With that though I feel as if you are pulling at an angle to start rather than a straight line.

I am using the drawbar that slips into the receiver like shown in the links above with a Warn shackle. It works good in the couple of times I needed to use it.

I think I'll end up getting a shackle. I don't have a draw bar to use. I'm planning on getting a tow strap along with the shackle.
