CJ is coolest
JK is most capable on the trail
TJ is the flyer of the rainbow flag
YJ is for high school kids

(rotflmao)

I've never been mistaken for a "high school kid", well at least not in a long long time :D
I've only driven a YJ (wrangler) and a Liberty (libsilver) but I've ridden in the rest of those Jeeps and I can tell you as they evolved the creature comforts increased.

Basically the CJ's didn't have radios or windshield defrosters and the ride was rough. The YJ's were a little better to ride in and had a radio but I can never hear it over the road noise. And with the TJ's & JK's the coil spring suspension improved the ride even more and yes you could actually hear the radio over the road noise, even with the doors off & the top down.

And yes I must agree with Thunderbird Junkie that the CJ models are the coolest looking, especially the "Daisy Duke" model rollinglaugh.gif

I have owned a YJ and a TJ
Have driven on and off road a JK
in bare boned stock form a JK is more capable off road
this is due to electronics or ESP
I how ever do not like the way you have to crank out 3-4K rpm to climb a hill
and yes you do or it will stall only the Rubicon with the 4.10 gears can climb a hill
I am not super sure but this is due to a lack of torque under 2K rpm
This is what makes the TJ and late model YJ better
they can idle up the same hill in stock form even with slightly bigger tires
The best auto trans to ever come on a wrangler is the TF999 ,also came in several
weaker versions ,907 ,909, 927, the 999 is stronger and has a torque converter lock up
the last Wrangler to roll off the line with 1 was back on '02 but they started off in CJ's

as you can tell I am bias but I did give the JK a chance as I drove 1 as a demo
on a trail ride ,I was considering selling the TJ for 1
but I like to go very slow and even with the auto the JK just could not do that
it felt like it had 3.07 gears in it
give me noisy gas burning uncomfortable but proven Jeep
with a 4.0 torque monster and the old faithful TF999

oh yeah and give me a Jeep with the gas tank out back not under me

I knew the tank was under the middle some where
I just poke fun at the JK for that
it makes them seem to high center easy ,mostly the 4 doors
AX15 was a 5 speed
the XJ came with a 4 speed auto but I am not sure on the model
I know it is fairly stout and some guys have done an XJ 4.0 and auto swap
into their Wranglers ,some have also done just the trans

It's a little thing called progress. The new models all have improvements over the older ones. The JK has a lot going for it, more HP then the 4.0 oh though not the torque. But it's not hard to modify them with a simple tuner. In fact one advantage is the tuners do more for the 3.6 then they ever did to the 4.0. Other then that better suspension, stronger axles, more comfort features, and more tire clearance out of the box. They made appeal to every day people will still giving off roaders things they wanted. And before any one says something about the weak stock bumpers ask yourself how many offroaders have their stock bumpers right now any way. No point in building something every is going to change any way.

Now everyone has their favorite for whatever reason, styling, first car, first jeep, or just fond memories but the truth is when you sit down and look at the facts and figures it adds up that every new model has been designed to out perform the last.

As for the JK's getting high centered it has more to due to the long wheel base on the 4 doors then the gas tank location. In fact it is better located then the others since it is mid-ship tucked up close to flat with the frame rails while the others hang it out the back and protect it with skids it still takes a pounding since it's what limits your departure angle. It's almost always the thing most wranglers hit when coming off of a ledge.

I built an '85 CJ7 with a 360/727/d300 combo. It was pretty sweet. A little loud and really squirrily. My wife has a '00 TJ with the 4.0l and a 5-spd. It does what it is intended to do. It has alot better manners than my CJ7 did that's for sure. All things considered I thought that the YJ's had the best platform for modifying though. Ofcourse as far as an out-of-the-box Jeep I really like my '04 Renegade the best.
